There is also a great need for pastoral leadership; this need seems to be increasing. This author, in an attempt to gain a better understanding of what is needed to lead the church within the presbytery he serves, set out to study the pastoral and leadership styles of five colleagues within the presbytery. This author solicited from each participant the biblical role models, the literature, and the people that have most greatly influenced them as a pastoral leader. The relationship between smaller membership churches and the presbytery is of particular concern. The author used surveys and multiple intervention strategies with smaller membership congregations within the Presbytery of Geneva, New York. Her conclusions include that transformational leadership that promotes healthy, vital, and tranformed communities of faith is paramount. Together with a new emphasis on elders as spiritual leaders, this change fosters a renewed interest in the preparation and care of congregational leaders. This project proposes a new vision for elder selection and training, and retention that emphasizes the spiritual and perennial nature of the call to ordination as Ruling Elder. It incorporates spiritual discernment and sabbath-keeping as essential elements, including a redefining of the 'college of elders'. This project is an experiment in using current technology and development research to create a confirmation curriculum which is appropriate and appealing to sixth-graders while upholding the polity of the Presbyterian Church (USA) and the theology of the Reformed tradition. The project combines biblical themes of alienation and transformation with popular culture portrayals of the outsider as mutant. This project focuses on the implementation of missional principles in a particular congregation to shift its narrative of decline to a narrative of revitalization. The report explores Second Presbyterian Church's historical identity leading to its period of decline, identifies missional principles, and then traces the narrative of the implementation of those principles within the congregation.
