The paper considers the functions of Christian liturgy and the history of Christian attitudes toward science, then describes the development of a liturgy including the Lord's Supper, and its test use within seven congregations of the Presbyterian Church (USA). Those who participated affirmed the importance of preaching in the churches studied. Areas of special consideration include the place of rhetorical principles in preaching, and the use of traditional evangelical invitations at the end of sermons. The study examines Christ's place in preaching persuasively, and the need for preparation for listening to sermons on the part of the laity.
