We studied three traditional responses that have been made at various intervals to the problem of evil, that of Leibniz, Augustine, and Calvin, the thought of Walter Kaufmann on the problem of evil, and three non-traditional responses to the problem made by Spinoza, Schleiermacher, Unamuno, and David Ray Griffin. In a ten week study group we addressed the philosophical problem of evil with a group of interested laypersons. Our argument was that traditional and popular attributes of divine omnipotence, omniscience, and moral perfection ought to be modified or altered in order that intelligent, perceptive, and sensitive church members would have fewer problems of guilt and fewer intellectual problems in their encounters with empirical evil and suffering."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["5a6e4a36-5801-4bff-8e61-86d7489efb4a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799716672888635392,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T02:06:07.741Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:57:44Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T02:17:50Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"340f4727-dd94-4b66-98e8-cf004fa09ded","accessControl_ssim":["18265d57-5834-4dcb-b024-428ebafde7de"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["The role of spiritual values in the recovery of alcoholics"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:57:43Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T23:38:27Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["1925fb65-9d99-465f-b8e3-bac956de0bd2"],"hasLease_ssim":["878bc734-68ef-44f6-9403-cfcc77f43a02"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Tibor Chikes"],"year_tesim":["1982"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. The disease is examined in the context of a theological anthropology based on process theology. The alcoholic responds to the call to wholeness in the radical, healing relationship of prayer. The project explores 1) the role of spiritual values in the recovery of alcoholics in a 28-day residential treatment program, and 2) the comparative length of sobriety reported after three months. The results are: 1) the experimental group showed increases in spiritual consciousness and practice; 2) the control group showed no significant level of difference in spiritual practice at t2 or t3 point although this group showed significant change in spiritual consciousness at both points when compared with t1; 3) the experimental group reported a longer length of sobriety. The implications of the study include: the need for spiritual ministry for alcoholics in recovery; the value of treating the person as a whole; the minister has a role on the health care team as a fellow professional."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["5a6e4a36-5801-4bff-8e61-86d7489efb4a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799717410656223232,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T02:17:51.331Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:51:43Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:50:25Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"2a74318a-3a06-46ef-8b94-c37341d25541","accessControl_ssim":["9e42b2ac-491a-43e9-8666-e23a9aa12803"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Body - symbol and sacrament: an approach to creating a sense of personal presence in worship"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T21:51:42Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T23:22:34Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["1f1bc10c-3d4d-4549-a6ec-7319abc2280d"],"hasLease_ssim":["61cdeb1f-6638-4812-b3a8-bb0bd3f2fe2d"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["United Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Kathleen A Farmer"],"year_tesim":["1982"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Mary Christine Rust"],"publisher_tesim":["United Theological Seminary (OH)"],"subject_tesim":["Symbolism","Process theology","Theology","Human body--Religious aspects","Liturgics","Worship--Study and teaching"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["Historically a sacramental perception of body has been obscured by opposing spirit and matter in religious awareness and practice. Process thought and personal experience become the tools to affirm the sacredness of the human body as a holy, valuing presence. This ministerial project includes an initial workshop designed to enhance individuals' appreciation of their biological, psychological and religious aspects in relation to their total environment. One instrument assesses body appreciation before the workshop, another afterwards. Although no change can be demonstrated, a high degree of participant satisfaction emerges. The document details both theology and methods.
