Crisis counseling programs of these churches were inadequate to meet congregational needs.  The purpose of this study was to develop a joint interchurch crisis counseling program which would be based on a psychological and theological point of view.  A twenty-four hour Christian crisis counselor training program was developed for six target churches, emphasizing a biblical basis for crisis counseling and Adam's nouthetic counseling system. To prepare for the seminar the author developed a Christian anthropology, researched the subject of stress and prepared seminar materials. After conducting it, he reviewed his findings with professionals from various disciplines and refined the process in further offerings.  Although the evaluations were not scientifically conclusive, participants in the seminars were very appreciative. Each of the steps is viewed in the thesis.  Some of the theological/biblical themes that emerge are: pneumatology and faith, conversion/spiritual transformation, confession, reconciliation and forgiveness, justification by grace, sanctification, freedom, baptism, prayer and meditation, worship, spiritual awakening, evangelism, and discipleship. Research is gathered from existing data and excerpts from over 30 taped interviews with persons who are either recovering alcoholics or are CD counselors in a treatment program and have some affiliation with the Christian faith. They were asked as to any theological/biblical themes they perceived in the twelve steps.  The intent of this thesis is to assist in the construction of bridges for communication and understanding between those in AA and those in the church. It begins with an overview of the Oxford Group Movement and its 8 points and explores the birth of AA looking specifically at the lives of the co-founders. The project consisted of six classes where personality and stewardship tests were given.  Discussions about the biblical view of stewardship and one's own feelings, fears, motivations, and needs took place. A pastor should be in constant dialogue with his or her own narcissism.  Secondly, a pastor needs to feel compassion for the inflicted individual or congregation. Also a pastor needs to feel empathy towards the narcissistic individual or congregation.  Even with constant monitoring and fine tuning, confrontation will cause narcissistic injury followed by anger and rage.
