It posits the paradox that people yearn for relationships (connections) with others yet keep themselves out of relationship (disconnected) because of hurtful past experiences. Case presentations show how key concepts of object relations theory--transference, countertransference, the unconscious, and resistance--can be reframed in a relational context to enable authentic and growth-fostering connections for both client and therapist.
