The hypothesis is that religious belief provides a healing and defensive influence in psychological change. The goal of the project is to help therapists better understand religious belief in its particular psychological context. By using three typologies with a case study method, the author finds that belief and affiliation serve intrapsychic functions unique to individual personality. When equipped with this understanding, the therapist is able to make better alliances and interpretations. This project describes programs offered at The Woman's Center of First United Methodist Church, Richardson, Texas. The programs include methods of self exploration and sharing that enable women to feel affirmed, accepted and connected to themselves, each other and God. Reflection reveals that techniques and ideas influenced by Jungian psychology, a participatory leadership style, and a warm homelike environment cooperatively enable transformation. Recommendations challenge churches to address the needs of women."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Perkins School of Theology"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["9d359def-dc0f-4ac7-a978-8df771bc0984"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791127317690449920,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T06:42:00.294Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T23:08:56Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T03:09:23Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"4d4029f8-10d0-40a7-b8d6-fc3141ebc42f","accessControl_ssim":["ee594eea-ec3d-40a9-8dd5-dfc9d33d01d1"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Faithing therapy: a reconstructive method"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T23:08:55Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T00:24:15Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["5361f659-dbdf-442b-b31b-26e2194414e5"],"hasLease_ssim":["cc4b129a-bcd7-4d74-a056-ecefe9f579b2"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Perkins School of Theology"],"advisor_tesim":["Leroy T Howe"],"year_tesim":["1987"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["A Eugene Dyess"],"publisher_tesim":["Perkins School of Theology Southern Methodist University"],"subject_tesim":["Meditation--Therapeutic use","Psychotherapy","Counseling","Faith","Psychology","Experience (Religion)","Schemas (Psychology)"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This project explicates the theory and practice of a specifically Christian religious experience psychotherapy method. Dialogical counseling and guided meditation are its major methodological divisions. The meditation component leads the client's psyche into a Christian religious state by following the intensified faithing schema. The schema is comprised of archetypal imagery and Christian belief statements which activate the client's affectively charged cognitive faithing structures. Creative growth symbols and crisis intervention procedures restructure preconscious negative mental-emotional-spiritual concepts which then tend to become behaviorally concrete. The thesis is: Faithing is the psyche's primary operation. Faithing therapy rests upon academic research, and is validated by thirty years of observation in parish and clinical practice."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Perkins School of Theology"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["9d359def-dc0f-4ac7-a978-8df771bc0984"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799720653694173184,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T03:09:24.134Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T23:06:01Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:15:17Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"26da763f-bb8b-4038-8eb2-faf3364e0c5d","accessControl_ssim":["9c1bd686-b15b-46f5-ae1e-21dbaa7fd14f"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Pastoral psychotherapy as an approach to the mysterium tremendum"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T23:05:57Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T23:16:29Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["90429d5f-f13d-4f71-8802-cbfa255dd683"],"hasLease_ssim":["e1dbcbe5-1fed-478b-95b6-b7acc6e5cef1"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"advisor_tesim":["Henry C Brooks"],"year_tesim":["1986"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Carl L Shesler"],"keyword_tesim":["Individuation","Psyche","Other, The"],"publisher_tesim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"subject_tesim":["Pastoral psychology","Alienation (Social psychology)","Psychotherapy","Psychology"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This project discusses pastoral psychotherapy as an approach to the numinous, symbol-making and self-healing potential of the psyche. The beginning point of the study is the psychological and spiritual suffering of the alienated psyche in the archetypal wasteland, a painful condition in which the individual feels separated and alienated from his or her own unconscious depths, from other people in human community, and from a seemingly destructive and unavailable God. This archetypal experience is viewed as the a priori condition for the healing of psyche and soul, a transformation which occurs through the establishment of a redeeming link with an infinite source of wisdom, guidance and blessing called, variously, the self-archetype or the greater personality in psychological language, or the mysterium tremendum or wholly other in theological language. The basic assumption of this study is that there is a religious instinct or drive within the psyche which mediates the contents of the objective psyche to the individual through images which disclose the symbolic meaning of events, reconcile opposites, and promote the individuation process."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["63ab0f5c-c5fb-460c-b8ba-dd2fd91f7145"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791133189847121920,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:15:20.420Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T23:05:33Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:17:30Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"3a303040-baf9-4081-afc2-5357d1f4564e","accessControl_ssim":["4fca0262-4c08-4cc4-ac85-bf6000106c6d"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Feminine psychology and pastoral care"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T23:05:32Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T23:49:09Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["700b02a7-6e9d-452b-91f3-d2ff039b8492"],"hasLease_ssim":["d300031c-ff54-4a49-b6b3-e445c975abbc"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"advisor_tesim":["J Earl Thompson"],"year_tesim":["1986"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Craig Ballard Millett"],"publisher_tesim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"subject_tesim":["Women and religion","Theology","Pastoral counseling","Psychology","Women"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This project looks at four major theories used to describe a psychology of women, and then outlines the theological presuppositions behind each one of the four.
