A unified identity will be developed through an understanding of Baptist heritage and its unique story.  Lay people and clergy worked in harmony with each other in this process.  Two main elements directed this search: four special 'period' worship services, and an 'experimental' service (focused on a potential future worship style). Through two non-threatening questionnaires Eastridge Baptist Church evaluated its Sunday morning worship service.  The study benefited the congregation by revealing needed adjustments to details of its worship practice and by serving as a vehicle for the congregation and its new pastor to become better and more rapidly acquainted. Praise is defined as the demonstrative expression of adoration to God for God and his acts in history.  The project identified the biblical, theological and historical bases for expanding praise in worship.  Various elements of worship through which praise is offered are identified.  Changes in the expectations of congregants are analyzed by comparing three questionnaires completed at different times during the project period. The project included a study group that engaged in eight study sessions of the book of Psalms.  This group then divided into five sub-groups, each of which was responsible for the ordering and implementation of a worship service centered upon a theme from the Psalms.  The project also included the efforts of a project steering committee that sought to explore the plurality of the worshiping community through the use of oral interviews. The project, which could serve as a model or catalyst for improving worship at similar churches, examines the theological and historical roots of worship. From this review, certain biblical and foundational principles to creative authentic worship were noted.  The method of study included the use of a questionnaire and an in-depth worship analysis with the spiritual leadership of the church.  Creative worship is not a gimmick for coercing worshippers or a means of pumping a new spirit in a decaying institution. With few exceptions, Baptist theological studies have largely ignored it.  The lingering shadows of revivalism have left most Baptists without 'a sense of the liturgical' and with a fear of anything that feels formal. Differences in liturgical practices exist between different groups of Baptists, and distinctions can be made between British Baptists and Baptists in America and between American and Southern Baptists.  As early as the eighteenth century there were Baptists who contended against the dangers of subjectivism.  Baptists' free church tradition moreover is not without a liturgical and theological perspective necessary for the development of 'a sense of the liturgical.'  the work of P. T. Forsyth, for instance, demonstrates what can be done with worship in the free church tradition. The best hope for liturgical renewal lies in a historical-theological perspective.
