Although progress has been noted concerning ethnic and racial relationships among America's citizenship, it is also clear that our nation must continue to move forward in breaking down ethnic and racial barriers that still divide. This dissertation proposes that the solution to what still separates one racial or ethnic group from another begins in the multiethnic church through transformational leadership. The author researched this subject matter by studying the history of racism and sexism in America and in the African American church.  She interviewed women preachers and male preachers who have had a history of supporting, affirming and celebrating women in ministry and in leadership roles in the church. How will the Church respond? One way is to create multiracial churches by merging monoracial congregations. Through literature research, surveys and interviews, the merits, challenges and opportunities of this ministry approach are examined. Merits include encountering God via different perspectives, and experiencing God's heart for the world through intercultural relationships. Challenges such as the tendency to associate with those like oneself, racial differences, and conflict resolution occur.
