While America has prided itself on its democratic ideal and its churches have sought to solve social justice problems, racial injustice continues to frustrate unity and trust among the races. Through education, cross-racial appointments, interracial dialogues, marches and rallies, the church has voiced its intolerance of racial injustice. The purpose of this paper is to provide another way clergy and the church may address the race problem. This new way presupposes a correlation between the Christian faith (the philosophy of nonviolence expounded by Dr Martin Luther King, Jr) and analytical psychology (Carl G Jung's concepts of the 'shadow' and to a lesser degree the 'self'). To a lesser degree the paper suggests, with Dr King as a prime example, that the degree to which one is able to realize the 'self' has a positive impact on one's public and private life, and the spirit of America as a whole. This paper concludes with some clues to enhance the growth of the ministering person and the effectiveness of one's ministry with respect to racial equality."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["63ab0f5c-c5fb-460c-b8ba-dd2fd91f7145"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791134169990955008,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:30:55.158Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T02:12:47Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:08:51Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"b5d9646e-fe7e-4e68-b74f-a5974710b639","accessControl_ssim":["bea3217c-238e-44ed-8f59-1e31d3d61ddf"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Leading the triethnic youth of Garden Villas Baptist Church to establish a relationship of Christian covenant"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T02:12:47Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:22:53Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["8914e010-a045-4164-a091-2f9a0e055859"],"hasLease_ssim":["5dd28baf-7426-47b2-aee7-488b3e291abb"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Charles S Kelley"],"year_tesim":["1992"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["William J Jackson"],"publisher_tesim":["New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Garden Villas Baptist Church (Houston, Tex)","Race relations","Church work with youth","Covenants--Religious aspects--Christianity"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The purpose of this research was to lead a representative group of triethnic youth, grades six through twelve, in Garden Villas Baptist Church, Houston, Texas, into a Christian covenant relationship. Churches in racial-transitional communities come up against powerful social forces that make it extremely difficult for them to survive and carry on a ministry.
