The central thesis of this paper is that a vision and ministry, no matter how impressive, cannot belong to one leader but must be embodied in the community through its leadership. Grounded in the theology of Howard Thurman, it calls attention to the pervasive injustices of living in a society of white privilege, racial prejudice, segregation, and discrimination, and to our blindness as members of Christian congregations within this society. It identifies a resistance of the soul and psyche of individuals and society as the 'will to segregate' and argues the need for conversion to the 'will to unite' in order to develop discipleship capable of developing and sustaining multiracial congregations."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799716583725072384,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T02:04:42.708Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T11:34:47Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:18:28Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"33c56b53-0794-4b41-a2a7-da73fe849fe8","accessControl_ssim":["2b16fb41-ff73-4eb6-aa93-a7da0bf7f52d"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["A place at the table: an African American preaching from margins to mainstream"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T11:34:46Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T23:38:00Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["f416a7a2-c4b8-42b7-867c-2db2988e068a"],"hasLease_ssim":["df7358c2-268c-4c4a-8ff6-a5fef63bb03a"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago"],"advisor_tesim":["Connie M Kleingartner"],"year_tesim":["2007"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Andrea L Walker"],"publisher_tesim":["Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago"],"subject_tesim":["African American preaching","Clergy","Race relations","Laity","Intercultural communication"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The author, who is an African American Lutheran, begins by showing evidence of racism in our society and the church.
