This process of unlearning (conversion) is life long.  Small rural communities, typically more resistant to change, are not immune to the sin of racism or the need for ongoing conversion.  Conversion begins with an awareness of racism brought to light through the prophetic preaching of the Word of God.  This conversion process is likened to the recovery process from an addiction. When the therapist is aware of her own stereotypes, values, and biases, a safe, respectful therapeutic environment can be established that permits a positive therapeutic alliance to develop between a white female therapist and her African American female clients.  A case study, this thesis explores and examines a means of developing and maintaining a therapeutic alliance using womanist theology and relational cultural therapy. GROUP used Gathering, Resources, Opportunities, Understandings, and Participants as key ingredients in eradicating the damaging effects of racism on African American males between the ages of 15 and 19. The research was done at St. Matthew United Methodist Church in Chicago, Illinois. Religious belief systems of African Americans informed the process. This project is an ethnographic case study of Oxon Hill United Methodist Church, Maryland, using qualitative research methods with the author as participant observer.
