Culture can pose a stumbling block insofar as it directs how we communicate, think, behave, and perceive things. The first generation Korean pastors experience racial and cultural collisions when they serve cross-racial/cross-cultural appointments. With adequate preparation, however, cross-racially/cross-culturally appointed clergy to this service can provide the bridge between two cultures. They can mediate between the cultures. But this change is possible only when we intentionally seek to understand ourselves as racial and cultural beings and to increase cross-cultural competency through educational and training experiences."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Claremont School of Theology"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["e7e2d3cb-fc51-4ba5-a7fd-d43f3f8c150b"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791131928795021312,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:55:17.787Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:28:22Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:55:10Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"4e52f8a6-5582-4fb3-8223-1ac5eb435665","accessControl_ssim":["00e8f1f7-04f8-4691-9c4c-49f07ea21701"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["A process for church mergers: Asian American and white churches"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:28:21Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T00:26:03Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["ed595f71-08a9-4e58-946c-3771735ec6a5"],"hasLease_ssim":["1cac9a31-5304-41ad-a510-cc5e4ab90fb4"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["McCormick Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Luis R Rivera"],"year_tesim":["2006"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Mariko Yanagihara"],"keyword_tesim":["Local church mergers"],"publisher_tesim":["McCormick Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Race relations","Asian American churches"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["There are an increasing number of church mergers. The complex system of Cambridge Community Fellowship Church served as the case study for this project. The framework for this study is provided by Eldin Villafañe's hermeneutical circle, which progresses as clarification (clarify the issue and the challenges at hand), conceptualization (applicable theological and sociological analysis), and confrontation (principles or next steps of addressing the issue). Clarification involves examining two of the central elements of CCFC, its postmodern ethos and its emergence from the immigrant experience. To that end, postmodern culture was studied from various angles. Additionally, the development of second generation ethnic American identity was also studied. Conceptualization involved the movement towards developing a relevant postmodern theology applicable in the urban context. Conceptualization also involved the application of systems thinking to unpack the system of CCFC in order to address specific issues at CCFC. Confrontation calls for the development of strategies and principles to address the various issues. The dramatic changes occurring in the demographic and cultural aspects of the American church call for an examination of the issues related to ministering to postmoderns, developing multi-ethnic ministry and ministry in the urban context."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130582336405504,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:33:53.704Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:18:39Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:06:02Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"8af6ad24-d20c-4300-abe0-1f91356eaff6","accessControl_ssim":["cd12532f-5fa3-4314-8360-a455f78eefde"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Race matters: closing Burrell Nursing Center and a revisit of the closing of the Central Jurisdiction"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:18:38Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T02:12:34Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["c700b00b-eb93-4f4b-a2ef-8f7a29731ab0"],"hasLease_ssim":["22b450f2-e989-4b65-b6b3-eb4bc6380598"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["William B McClain","Lewis A Parks"],"year_tesim":["2005"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. This research explores how the use of narrative form and style in preaching increases empathy among the members of St. Matthew Presbyterian Church. The two phases of qualitative research-sermon feedback sessions and individual interviews-are reported.
