A lack of space limits the number of student seats available, while tuition costs restrict access to families able to afford sky-high rates. Meanwhile, childcare teachers are paid low salaries for their services, and children living in poverty fall farther and farther behind. Such a challenge threatens not only a child’s livelihood, but also the congregation’s vision “that all may know God’s love.” This project will examine how the principles of adaptive leadership might reframe the congregation’s missiological understanding and practices via the work of education. This project sought to equip them to begin to identify and name before God their own suffering, and that of others. My research was conducted in the context of a Lenten bible study, a prayer walk, interviews and a survey. Participants also created their own laments. The Word of the holy God is preached and received to make a holy people.  This is a clear Biblical expectation.  Four passages serve to illustrate the consistent focus of scripture on the sanctification of God’s covenant people: Deut. 6, Matt. 5, Eph. 4, and 2 Pet. 1.   The impact of the preaching of John Calvin in Geneva is explored to gauge its impact on the sanctification of the people sitting under the Word.  The influence of the Consistory of Geneva is also examined to determine how they created an expectation of sanctification in that Reformed city.Themes in Walter Marshall’s work, The Gospel Mystery of Sanctification, are summarized to enumerate the various theological strands which are woven together with our sanctification.  Those themes are then used to also discover the degree to which more contemporary sources support a Biblical understanding of the place of sanctification in the Christian life. Lastly such themes are employed to provide a framework in which local churches can increase their emphasis on continual growth in holiness for all of the members of the church.  Ideas for equipping the elders of the church to support this emphasis are detailed. The study begins by demonstrating the debate over the use and interpretation of the BCO within the PCA. It introduces the debate by putting the BCO into the context of the Constitution of the PCA, examining its relation to the Westminster Standards, and how subscription to the Standards affects operating under the BCO. Having put the BCO into the larger context of the Constitution of the PCA, it explores the current debate over polity before examining the resources available to illuminate the BCO. The study moves then to the basic biblical principles of Presbyterian church government. It investigates the headship of Christ as the foundational principle of Church government before working out the implications of his headship in jure divino government and the regulative principle. An examination of Acts 15 shows Christ’s headship in action in the life of the Church, leading to an exploration of the fundamental Scriptural principles that underlie and shape Presbyterian polity. The study then surveys the historical development of the BCO from its beginnings in the Colonial era to the current time to see the significant influences that shaped it. This historical context gives the framework to understand both the larger shape of the Church laid out by the BCO and some of the individual provisions. This committee was the pioneer among the synodical committees on Christian Education in the Reformed Church. Its membership included some of the outstanding men of the reformed church, and its program many of the finest achievements in Christian education. Since the merger of the Reformed church in the United States and the Evangelical Synods this committee as such has been dissolved but its members are continuing the work as an inter-synodical group. No attempt has been made to present a complete chronological history of the work of the committee. In keeping with the purpose this is an interpretive history. Outstanding personalities and events have been included in so far as they were related to the various projects considered. This project explores the liturgy of Second Church as a dynamic influence on the church in mission. The rhythms of our weekly Sunday morning liturgy are formative for the people of Second Reformed Church. Not only are people rooted and grounded in God’s presence through Word and Sacrament, but they are also sent out from worship to engage specific places in God’s world using their gifts and passions to serve others.The practice of ethnography reveals the ways the liturgy challenges, confirms, and inspires the people of Second Church to engage in mission. The liturgy of Second Reformed Church provides a framework for that service and engagement, whether at home, work, serving on a non-profit board, direct community service, or financial generosity.The connection between liturgy and mission is not new for Second Reformed Church, yet this focus comes at a critical moment in Second’s story. The building project (completed in 2018) included vision for a different kind of community engagement that we have not yet embraced due to a pastoral crisis followed by a global pandemic. In this season of re-emerging from a global pandemic, Second is poised to explore critical questions around mission.
