Chapter Two describes the author's personal conflict with the decretal theism of his youth. It starts with childhood perceptions of God while growing up in a Reformed context. The chapter travels through a personal history with Dort and concludes with the discovery of the writings of Stephen Covey and John Sanders. Chapter Three discusses the history of the Canons of Dort, questioning the doctrine of reprobation. It goes into a pastoral evaluation of decretal theism and concludes with a study of the contemporary influence of the teachings of Dort in the RCA. Chapter Four compares the decretal theism of the Westminster Confession and the Canons of Dort with the teachings of modern business consultant and best-selling author, Stephen Covey. This chapter asserts that, especially in today's context, emphasis needs to placed more on human responsibility than on God's eternal decrees. Chapter Five compares decretal theism to relational theism. It discusses the risk-free nature of Dort and compares it to the relational 'risk' theism of John Sanders. Chapter Six discusses various implications decretal theism may have for the RCA. The suggestion is made that we further examine our theology as perhaps one of the contributing causes of our decline. Chapter Seven concludes the paper with statistics of decline in the RCA. The suggestion is again made that perhaps our lack of growth is due, at least in part, to our lack of motivation to evangelize. It may be that our lack of motivation is due to our theology that does not put enough emphasis on human responsibility."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Western Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["c24f9e0f-f5f0-45a3-b7f1-6a406c6902fb"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791135388527493120,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:50:17.245Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:29:29Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:43:17Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"93873b57-6004-424c-84c8-5f87d337580d","accessControl_ssim":["ae82bbd3-48f2-444d-975d-91785f01978a"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["It's Easier Together: Christian Teamwork through the Eyes of Ruling Elders in Mid-Sized Reformed Churches"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:29:28Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T02:27:05Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["5e0e37bc-3ef4-49ed-8dfc-dc4679e5bbd8"],"hasLease_ssim":["2c8ea6ee-591a-4ade-9ff8-f1b672bcbeb3"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Robbie Griggs"],"year_tesim":["2020"],"resource_type_tesim":["Dissertation"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Matt Giesman"],"subject_tesim":["Reformed Church","Presbyterian Church","Church management","Elders (Church officers)","Leadership--Religious aspects"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The purpose of this study is to investigate how ruling elders from mid-sized Reformed churches describe their teamwork. The assumption of this study is that most pastors do not begin their ministry with a sufficient understanding of the need for teamwork amongst their lay leaders and that such teamwork is vital to their ministry success. This study utilized a qualitative design using semi-structured interviews with eight elders at mid-sized churches (approximately 150-450 in attendance) in the Presbyterian Church in America. The literature review and analysis of the eight interviews focused on three key areas to understand the nature of teamwork in mid-sized Reformed churches: trust in teams, power dynamics in teams, and the parity of elders. This study found that the following are the five most common descriptions of teamwork in mid-sized Reformed churches: fellowship beyond business hours builds trust and teamwork; healthy conflict and patient listening are hallmarks of healthy teamwork; power is used “judiciously” in healthy teams; consensus is sought and usually achieved in healthy teams; healthy teams are humble, with no MVP, with no head except Christ. Therefore, the study concluded that these strategies should be implemented and modeled in mid-sized Reformed churches by elders."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"related_url_tesim":["http://covenantlibrary.org/etd/2020/Giesman_Matt_DMin_2020.pdf"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["e57e5218-1d34-47f5-b1a5-b84efbc9e61f"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791131177331982337,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:43:21.136Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:29:00Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:43:25Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"9478ab3d-4dca-4d58-8375-73b93f2be55c","accessControl_ssim":["4bd5b0eb-c01e-4bb7-891e-013403c2073f"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Transition from Founding Pastor to First Successor Pastor: Every Pastor Is an Interim Pastor"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:28:59Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T02:28:43Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["9391354f-c18d-4763-9a9b-8ea22b195fbd"],"hasLease_ssim":["95d57291-928e-49ba-9c2e-06e860200d74"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Bruce McRae"],"year_tesim":["2021"],"resource_type_tesim":["Dissertation"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Christopher A. The spiritual modelcan be pictured using an image of a wheel where Christ is placed at the hub (thecenter) of one’s life and is connected to all the spokes (or parts) of one’s life. Themodel works to encourage people to move Christ closer to the center of theirlives, where they can live and have their being in their “true selves,” as God’s willintends.Using this model of spiritual formation, a field research project wasdeveloped to help spiritually form the spiritual leaders of the OakridgePresbyterian Church congregation towards a greater unity in Christ. Using theExamen as a spiritual practice helped guide participants to focus and beintentional about noticing God’s presence in all things and therefore helping tokeep Christ as the centre of their life. The field research component helpeddetermine how the congregation’s spiritual leaders had deepened their awarenessof the presence of God in daily life."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Tyndale University"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["602e7e7c-0b8b-4e09-af87-84c66ff49c48"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791133678917648384,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:23:06.833Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:01:56Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:35:14Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"e9f1ac41-c51b-45a2-b88d-71bdde57473c","accessControl_ssim":["edd7ef2e-4a31-4c87-b629-6370c2a5bba9"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Outsiders on the Inside: Racial Fatigue and Resilience among Black Pastors in the Presbyterian Church in America"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:01:55Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:49:50Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["505f337a-fa4c-4af0-a1c7-3f5fe75478a8"],"hasLease_ssim":["d4477ec3-a63a-4258-bd3c-bf9e19ea9b11"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Trinity Episcopal School for Ministry (Ambridge, PA)"],"advisor_tesim":["Wesley Hill Ph.D."],"year_tesim":["2020"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. Engaging Biblical texts, Reformed Polity, the Spirituality of Aging, and key theologies––Practical, Vocation, Discipleship and Life-Long Learning––the project offers the church a clear vision for the future and a tangible plan to organize, energize and engage the congregation. The implementation of the project, involving the Worship and Christian Education ministries of the church, as well as the qualitative social research methodologies of self-report questionnaires and guided interviews, enabled the project to clearly communicate that vision and plan, and convey the sense of validation needed to establish participants trust, so crucial to the success of the project.
