Online renewal used Sabbath themes to provide web-based content. To facilitate accountability and chaplains' desire for fellowship a 'Sabbath friend' was created. The MBI Human Services Survey instrument determined the success of web-based renewal. Overall, MBI found chaplains decreased their feeling of burnout and increased their feelings of ministry accomplishment. The online Sabbath renewal project was a first step to provide Navy chaplains a viable opportunity to continue their spiritual vitality in arduous duty assignments around the world. The evaluation of the web design was a secondary goal. Using Likert scales, the evaluation measured technical aspects of web-based design such as cognitive load, aesthetics, and navigation. The online renewal site successfully helped chaplains with spiritual renewal/awareness that resulted in greater feelings of accomplishment in ministry. The results of this project also offered hope for the future application of web-based renewal for everyone in the helping profession. In the end, this project accomplished a new method for facilitating the ancient need for spiritual renewal."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791131727115059200,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:52:05.450Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:20:52Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:55:07Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"a5903ba5-e2b9-4bcd-a7a8-3c68e6bf22f7","accessControl_ssim":["11b58a81-36bd-4a16-8cc9-f1574f213cf7"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["The role of multimedia in expository preaching"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:20:51Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T02:56:19Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["08400322-ac40-4cec-aa63-a6e5f2d87b9e"],"hasLease_ssim":["448df7e3-e259-4ce5-b76f-c69a4ce293ad"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Sid Buzzell"],"year_tesim":["2005"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Kevin A Purcell"],"publisher_tesim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Religion","Postmodernism","Christian education--Audio-visual aids","Technology","Expository preaching"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["Our world is dominated by a postmodern mindset and visual and multi-sensory communication. The hypothesis was that when the rural church closes the gap between personal use of media-technology and the use of media-technology in ministry, the result would result in growth. This project was composed of three stages: recruiting rural clergy and church leaders (Elders/Deacons, Christian Education, Music), having these individuals complete a survey, and obtaining feedback in the form of focus groups. The recruitment phase provided helpful information from the pastors through completion of the survey as well as submitting names of their leaders. The second phase helped the researcher obtain the data necessary to formulate accurate detailed information. The final phase gave the researcher an opportunity to interact with the pastors and leaders following the completion of the survey in order to determine what, if any, impact the device produced. upon final evaluation, this project revealed that the greatest technology gap was between the amount of media-technology used personally by lay leaders and that used by clergy in ministry."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791127639865425920,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T06:47:07.545Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:12:10Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T03:25:27Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"bdd8bdbd-79f1-45d7-aa8c-e31598415d2f","accessControl_ssim":["d1d711ac-bd5f-416b-bf5b-671d9a46f434"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["From text to talkies: communicating the good news in a post-literate culture"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T10:12:09Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:35:49Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["70d9f2ae-fb06-4fcd-8953-1e5c1d5a8ab5"],"hasLease_ssim":["da6b802e-915c-4749-a3f9-322d6c456728"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Denise Dombkowski Hopkins"],"year_tesim":["2005"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. It provides biblical theological reflection, guidelines, and ideas for the use of visual display art. The following research questions guide this study: 1. what led to the present or past use of visual display art? 2. what has been the result of using display art in congregational life and ministry? 3. what, if any, efforts are being made to change the role of visual display art in congregational life and ministry? This research is a qualitative examination of visual display art and its role in the past, present, and plans for the future of Reformed and Presbyterian congregations. This study uses information gathered from two focus groups and seventeen interviews to gain insight into congregations from seven different denominations, all with roots in the Reformed and Presbyterian tradition. Among the lesson learned from this study and research, the following insights form the central findings: 1. Biblical and theological reflection does not support a complete separation from involvement in or use of visual arts in the individual, family, or corporate lives of Christians. 2. The presence of visual display art in the buildings and programs of churches with a Reformed and Presbyterian heritage currently has limited scope; moreover, there is little knowledge among most members as to how these visual pieces came into use. 3. The evaluation of the use of visuals in the life of a particular congregation is informal and sketchy at best. 3.
