Tradition--the theology and history of worship--helps to insure that worship is Christian; attention to culture helps Christian worship to be hospitable. Cultures that are community-oriented consider sin in light of relationships. 'Sin' is a behavior or attitude that alienates a person from those whose relationship he values; that alienation is experienced as shame. Drawing on the insights of family systems theory, particularly the concept of self-differentiation, the project focuses on the experiences of North American Mennonites, who in many ways have integrated into the surrounding culture but are still strongly influenced by the theology and practices of their tradition. Based on research that brought together three manifestations of the Law and Gospel paradigm and American individualism, the project prepares four sermons that illustrate the use of the paradigm in preaching to individualism. Focus groups provide critical responses to each sermon. The project articulates a distinction between American individualism and Christian
