After studying the training of elders as described in the New Testament, tracing the history of theological education in the United States, and conducting case studies of some contemporary church-centered training programs, the author concluded that it is feasible for local churches to train pastors.  The hypothesis was tested in a training program conducted by the author at Hinson Memorial Baptist Church in Portland, Oregon.  Five students were trained in hermeneutics and homiletics over a six-month period. In measurements made over a six-month period, both attitudinal and cognitive changes were noted in the men. The project is a disciplined reflection on, and evaluation of, the author's experience in teaching courses in Pacific studies, Christian education, and worship.
