Believing that hope is rooted in an experiential encounter with God, this thesis first examines inaugural eschatology with its multi-dimensional view of the resurrection, i.e. the past event, the future promise, and the present reality, and contrasts it with dispensational eschatology. As a means to foster experiential encounters with God, this project used the celebrative narrative preaching design of Henry Mitchell and Frank Thomas. The design was contextualized for a primarily Anglo Baptist congregation in southern Oregon. The intertestamental literature is found to give evidence to a variety of understandings of both resurrection and immortality of the soul.  The New Testament texts are described as being witness to an event and as theological interpretation.  A tendency to emphasize immortality of the soul is traced from selected Church Fathers through Aquinas to Schleiermacher.  The 20th century views of Bultmann, Pannenberg and Fisher (process theology) are considered.
