Traditional didactic classroom instruction is not always sufficient, because it does not provide an opportunity for elders to apply what they have learned. To compensate for this lack of experiential learning, role-play was incorporated into elder training in a particular congregation, resulting in the conclusion that role-play is a useful training tool in certain situations. Consequently, it is the author's contention that roleplay ought to be used more frequently in the pastoral theology classroom.  The proposed model portrays counseling, administrative, visitation, pulpit, and personal situations encountered by today's pastors.  It includes the following features: preparatory notes, the actual roleplay, a peer evaluation, a follow-up discussion, a self-evaluation, and the teacher's evaluation.
