The situation of the diocese of Bismark is similar to most rural dioceses in the United States. Integrating gender studies, rural sociology, rural catechetical ministry and contemporary leadership theory, this thesis-project maintains that leadership development uniquely focused for women in rural catechetical ministry will increase their sense of self as leader and leadership practices. The study gives voice to rural women involved in catechetical ministry as they expressed themselves in various sessions. The context for the thesis project was the Stanwood Free Methodist Church which is located forty-give minutes north of Grand Rapids, Michigan. Stanwood is a small village of aobut 200 people.  Most of the people of the church live in the country.  The design of the project was a case study using an action research model.  This model was used to effect a change in the given congregation's understanding, experience, and practice of the communal meal.  The thesis was evaluated along accepted lines of social research using a triangulation of methods including questionnaires, a focus group, and field notes. The thesis is informed by The New Homiletic and makes use of an aspect of family systems theory called leadership through self-differentiation and emotional connection to explain the transformation of the author as a preacher and a leader. Often those of us who find ourselves in these situations look for a pre-packaged program that will simply plug into the current church. The research discloses that pre-packaged programs have a fatal flaw in that they are not transculturally friendly. It also discloses that it is better to develop a program based on the specific culture in which the church is located.
