Listening to various voices from different people in the community enabled us to see where the church stands and where to take the next step. The author and his rural congregation offered five forms of art-based welcome to the community to test this thesis by informal interviews, observations, questionnaires and theological reflection. The author created this ministry tool to affirm, inform, empower and bridge the gap between a pastor and ministry leaders, particularly the deacon's ministry, in a rural Black Baptist church. The project involves working with curriculum action research embedded within one-day ministry discernment events for laity. Measurement tools include a spiritual gift inventory, repeated measures Likert questionnaires, a short-term photovoice exercise, and semi-structured interviews.
