Using original sources, the author shows how a liberal 'vision,' above and beyond the 'modernism' of the times, contributed to an unprecedented level of church growth, individual enthusiasm, and social and political influence.  A significant factor was the large number of women ministers serving in Iowa in positions of power. Over a three year period efforts were made to explore biblical stories concerning women with a group of women in a small rural parish.  Methods included Bible study, retreat days, Sunday preaching, and use of scripture in pastoral counseling. Periodic evaluation and shared reflections were used as indicators of growth. The theology of the cross can help people in rural communities find a way to deal with the paradox of technological advancement and rural decline.  Sources on the rural community came from census documents and writings about agriculture. The ability of the author, project associates, participants, and the church to handle conflict productively is documented.  It also describes how the persons involved were enriched by developing skills and confidence in conflict management. For eleven weeks they met with the pastor weekly for a Bible study experience that applied principles and techniques from neuropsychology and neurolinguistic programing.
