This exploratory research was conducted to investigate the relationship between self-esteem, socioeconomic attainment and God-concept among African-American Baptists in East Baltimore.  Self-esteem was not shown to have a statistically significant impact on overall socioeconomic attainment. Stage One (Attending) examines literature concerning tradition (the doctrine of Imago Dei), experience (the feminist theology of Letty Russell), and culture (the recent work on codependency).  Stage Two (Asserting) posits a shift in the understanding of the doctrine of Imago Dei and develops a theology of self-esteem; and, Stage Three (Acting) describes a thirty-week course designed and tested as a means of systemtic intervention in an Episcopal congregation. The results of this intervention are measured as pre- and posttests by using the Secord-Jourard Self Cathexis Scale and the Gecas 12-item Semantic Differential Scale (both highly reliable and valid instruments).
