The author contends that by teaching one's contract for communication in preaching to the congregation, the listener will be able to perceive in advance the import of a forthcoming message.  Such teaching and preparation enables more effective listening to sermons and better equips the listener for ministry. Preaching is defined as the proclamation of the Word of God through lecturing.  Historically, within the author's Methodist tradition, preaching has been a lecture--totally void of narrative, illustrations or even questions.  Within recent years a variety of teaching methods have been incorporated into preaching delivery but the use of these methods has seldom been questioned or even tested.
