Perfection is defined not as a sermon that is free of errors but rather as a sermon that is mature and complete, arising out of awareness and knowledge of God that is received, in part, through the experience of receiving spiritual direction.Chapter 1 provides an introduction to spiritual direction through offering several definitions and a short history.Chapter 2 describes my experience of receiving spiritual direction and using that experience as a preaching resource.Chapter 3 provides an analysis of how the experience of receiving spiritual direction is useful in preaching. I give attention to four areas: 1. Increased awareness of God through spiritual direction that is used as a basis for preaching; 2. Increased awareness of self through spiritual direction that is used in preaching; 3. Anecdotal experiences that occur in spiritual direction that can be used as sermon illustrations; 4. The project leader will enlist a cross-section of church members for interviews.  The project leader, under the supervision and guidance of a sociologist, will listen for images of the nature of the church.  He will preach a series of narrative sermons designed to undergird the biblical images of the nature of the church. The compelling images and metaphors in the sermon series will replace the non-biblical understandings of the nature of the church.  These sermons will create a biblical, prophetic, and positive view of the church, by that helping the church in its goal of improving assimilation.  Following the sermon series, the project leader will again interview the interviewees, under the supervision and guidance of the sociologist, to listen for changes in images and metaphors. This method was used to develop a congregation's understanding and use of its mission statement.  A series of six roundtable conversations was undertaken, each conversation focusing on a different element of the mission statement.  Sermons were developed from these conversations. It is concerned with the proper understanding and functioning of a team and how a team improves the quality of sermons. The thesis begins by showing that preparation teams are in-line with direct and indirect emphasis of Scripture. Principles for the effective function of a preparation team are drawn from business literature about teams. The work also includes a survey of pastors with experience in a sermon preparation team. A survey of listener needs was given to identify sermon topics.  From the survey three sermons were selected and developed by the pastor and a small group called the Parish Project Group (PPG).  Following each sermon a congregational feedback meeting was conducted to determine how the sermons were received by those attending.
