Preaching is defined as the proclamation of the Word of God through lecturing.  Historically, within the author's Methodist tradition, preaching has been a lecture--totally void of narrative, illustrations or even questions.  Within recent years a variety of teaching methods have been incorporated into preaching delivery but the use of these methods has seldom been questioned or even tested. A congregational sermon review group provided its feedback regarding each sermon type.  The results indicated that the congregation preferred a variety of sermon types.  Two sermon types were rejected: postil and visual aids sermons. The five categories were: 1) vivid retelling of a Biblical passage (usually a narrative), 2) retelling/updating of a Biblical parable, 3) 'baptizing' a secular story, 4) a sermon centered upon a single image, and 5) an original story (written or extemporaneous).  Two sermons were preached in each category in worship services in Liberia, West Africa, where the author taught Bible and preaching courses.  The use of the fourth category is discouraged. The others are affirmed by careful analysis. Arts employed include short story, drama, poetry, music, and visual arts. Methodology entailed determination of issues people wanted addressed; preparation of sermons based on those concerns and summarizing feedback received by several means. A 'participant-observer' field method is used through the course of the study. A four-fold analysis (contextual, mechanical, organic, and symbolic) of a congregation's subculture aids the preacher in the work of ethnography.  The symbolic analysis is expanded to include seven congregational symbols readily accessible to the preacher.  The study utilizes story in reporting the findings that detail the congregation's unique world view, values, and ethos.  The study then explores the role of ethnography in sermon preparation and the preaching moment.  Members of the congregation participated in a parish project group to prepare and evaluate sermons.  Interventions were based on feedback from the project group, a congregational survey, and the effect of preaching on the congregation's vision for future ministries. The congregation was separated into two groups for a period of eight weeks.  One group experienced video-assisted sermons and the other did not.  Each group was tested for retention of the sermon message. Results from the testing were further divided into five generations present in the church.  Statistically it could not be said that greater retention was gained by video-assistance. This type of analysis yields syntactical display, which shows not only the threads of thought in the Scriptures, but also the outline of expository preaching. The project leader will enlist a cross-section of church members for interviews. The compelling images and metaphors in the sermon series will replace the non-biblical understandings of the nature of the church.  These sermons will create a biblical, prophetic, and positive view of the church, by that helping the church in its goal of improving assimilation.  Following the sermon series, the project leader will again interview the interviewees, under the supervision and guidance of the sociologist, to listen for changes in images and metaphors.
