Activity centered around: 1) matters relating to Old Testament authority and the adoption of a methodology; 2) a treatment of narrative, poetic and prophetic genres of literature; and 3) two preaching labs. The preacher conducts a retrospective assessment utilizing cassette tape recordings of sermons along with a detailed, in-depth questionnaire.  The strategy is comprehensive, divided into three major components: design, implementation procedure, and model for processing the data.  It is illustrated by application to four representative sermons, with extensive data gathered from 211 respondents. The hypothesis was that there would be no difference between postsermon test results following traditional sermons and test results following sermons divided into four parts.  The author presented six sermons in each format.  Following the worship services randomly selected persons completed a 20-question multiple-choice test to determine content retention.  T-tests of grand mean scores for tests following each format revealed no significant difference in levels of comprehension. The project takes seriously the pastoral aspect  of preaching within the church and uses this general pastoral approach to preaching.  It examines the process by which the listener is involved in the preparation phase of preaching and how the relationships with the preacher, with other group members, and with the preaching material can make a difference in the impact of the sermon on the hearer.  The project was conducted over a six-week period of time.  A small group of nine laity were recruited from a suburban United Methodist Church in Rowlett, Texas.  This small group met with the pastor weekly to consider the sermon text for the Sunday morning worship.  Three sermons were preached from narrative texts in the book of Genesis. Although the main goal of the group was to explore the biblical text, special care was taken to make sure that relationships were developed in the small group experience for each participant. A ten part sermon series was developed and delivered on the following disciplines: inner life, prayer, confession, reading and journaling, Bible study, meditation, devotional life, fasting, personal worship, and ministry. Sermons were reinforced through distribution of outlines and worksheets as well as through the encouragement of additional reading. Comparison of before and after surveys revealed substantial improvement in the practice of the disciplines. Six monologue/sermons were written and presented for worship and to other church groups.  The goal was to present Peck historically and spiritually within the context of marginal personality. Each presentation was video-taped and critiqued by lay and clergy groups.  This genre revealed dramatic limitations which led to the writing of a seventh, much longer drama which added a narrator and bit parts. Such teaching and preparation enables more effective listening to sermons and better equips the listener for ministry.
