To be successful, preachers need to consider what makes for effective and helpful example stories, because stories can be a window to the core idea of a sermon.  However, many preachers have difficulty finding good example stories when they prepare sermons.  This project examines selected passages in Paul's writings from a homiletic perspective.  Paul's metaphors and analogies have some recommendable elements and provide standards for selecting example stories.  Paul's marriage and potter analogies in Romans and the planting and running metaphors in 1 Corinthians are excellent examples for contemporary preachers to follow.  Two Korean pastors who are very famous for their impressive and influential sermons also have distinctive example stories within their sermons. There are some commonalities and differences among them. Personal interviews with members of the congregation and focus groups that evaluated sermons provided feedback and insights related to the effectiveness of illustrations in preaching. The researcher complied responses from the interviews and the focus groups to draw some conclusions about how illustrations function most effectively in aiding comprehension and facilitating and effective hearing of the message. Chapter 1 introduces this preaching project and the ministry context of First Baptist Church, Camden, Arkansas.  Chapter 2 identifies five types of illustrations used in the Bible.  They are an anecdote, a historical event, parables, Scripture, and visual aids.  Chapter 3 moves from the Bible to the preaching of today.  The first part of chapter 3 identifies types of preaching illustrations. Part two gives examples of sources of illustrations, and part three summarizes the illustration techniques and practices of five famous Christian preachers.  Chapter 4 is a week-by-week account of my 1 Peter preaching project.  It includes pre-sermon series questionnaires, individual sermon questionnaires, and post-sermon series questionnaires.  Chapter 5 is an evaluation of the entire project.  Data is analyzed.  The process is critiqued. The author analyzed an interdenominational sample of fifty sermons from GLBT contexts.  The sermons were numerically scored to discern the local theology preached.  Key topics were queer Biblical hermeneutics, the development of healthy GLBT communities, integrating identity as GLBT and Christian, working for justice in hostile cultures, and developing a theology of sexuality and relationships. Though the Holy Spirit plays the most critical role in application, the Bible calls preachers to cooperate with the Spirit by including effective application in their sermons.  Effective application requires both biblical accuracy and contemporary relevance.  Sermons often fall short of their potential effectiveness because their application lacks one or both of these elements. The results revealed the significant benefit to be gained through the use of story sermons within congregational settings. What we truly think shapes our decisions and our behavior.  Over the last two decades, cognitive scientists have developed a strong body of research to argue that whenever we think about abstract concepts, such as Spiritual growth, we use metaphors to think with.  And while metaphors enable us to think about abstractions; they also shape our thinking about those abstractions. Evangelical preachers, by and large, give their listeners performance-based metaphors for thinking about their interactions with God.  Sermon applications typically emphasize 'steps to attain X'--where 'X' is the goal for that particular sermon. This activates a ladder or staircase metaphor in their listeners' thinking--a metaphor that emphasizes effort.
