Therefore, the preacher/pastor must include therapeutic sermons within the preaching calendar.  The purpose of this research was to focus on the necessity and the nature of preaching expository sermons that are therapeutic from biblical, theological, and historical perspectives.  The concept of therapeutic absorbency was introduced as being a necessary part of therapeutic preaching.  A defense of expository preaching as the appropriate method for preaching therapeutic sermons was also given.  The literature review integrated the contributions of authors on preaching and on preaching as it relates to pastoral care. This served as the basis for the development of a curriculum for a workshop. Each group was age-graded and was no larger than fifteen members.  A facilitator and assistant guided group discussion in each meeting.  The curriculum consisted of thirteen messages--prepared from the book of Ephesians--which revolved around the deepening of relationships and building biblical church fellowship.  Sunday morning messages were further discussed within each home group, with the aid of discussion guides.  Each group discussed how the messages would positively and negatively affect the health of the church fellowship. Methodical bible study focuses primarily on the English text, and in this study system, one learns how to observe, interpret, and apply the Bible to one's life and congregation.  In the first step of observation, the pastor must slow down to really see what is in the text.  He is trying to answer the question: what does the text say? Then comes the second step of interpretation.  Now the preacher must use what has been observed in the text and begin to discover how it relates to life.  He is trying to answer the question: what does the text mean? The third and final step is application. Here the preacher studies the information he has learned in the first two steps and must answer the question: how does this apply to the lives of the preacher and the congregation?  The preacher then uses this information from methodical bible study and integrates it as part of sermon preparation. The aim was to determine the issues that are importnt to once-churched individuals and how to shape sermons on these issues. During the project, both churched and once-churches individuals completed surveys to determine their feelings about the church and their personal needs.  Four sermons were crafted in response to these surveys.  Participants listened to and responded to each sermon.  Changes were made to future sermons based upon the response each week. The secular world has no place for God, and church tradition has tended to emphasize God's transcendence.  As a result, God's presence needs to be revised in a way that is meaningful to contemporary believers.  It is my thesis that for my Latvian Lutheran congregation, the imagery of God that is found in our Godsongs, together with the dynamic relationship of God-and-the-world that is process thought, can offer creative possibilities for preaching God's presence in daily life.  The project examines the Godsongs which are part of the folkloric heritage of the Latvian people.  This ancient and pre-Christian tradition envisions God's relationship to the world in a way that is quite similar to process thought.  In both paradigms, God is ever-present in all of creation as shared divine wisdom and power. The Godsongs say that God is present and God helps in poetic images that speak to the heart.  Process thought addresses the mind; it models God-and-the-world in a way that makes sense to the scientific sensibilities of contemporary people.  The Godsongs and process thought provide new metaphors for preaching that address the whole person--head and heart.  As metaphors, they are partial but also illuminating.  Because they are 'heard' in a way that older metaphors may not be, they bring the hearer of the sermon into the preaching process by providing them with the opportunity to agree or disagree. The sermon preparation process develops a synthetic outline, propositions (exegetical, theological and homiletical) for sermon portions and message outlines. The communication strategy designs sermons to persuasively preach elements of discipleship.  The spiritual journey evaluation measures congregational change in discipleship attitudes and actions.  The post-test assesses relative effects of other variables.  The congregation demonstrated increased discipleship, though the difference was not statistically significant.
