My project utilized the Preaching Skills Enhancement Model found in the DMin Handbook at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. The project was completed in three phases: research, writing, and preaching. During the first phase of the project, I researched biblical leadership concepts to identify best practices. The research phase produced an annotated bibliography of selected works in the field of leadership and an executive summary of selected biblical leadership concepts. Dr. Ray Van Neste evaluated both the annotated bibliography and the executive summary. During the second phase of the project, I developed a five-part sermon series to teach on God’s design for leadership. During the final phase, I preached the sermon series at Summertown Baptist Church, Summertown, Tennessee. Two expert preaching evaluators evaluated the sermon series. After  researching related biblical texts, existing models of deacon training, and selected resources in the field of study, the project director produced a curriculum for equipping deacons. Credentialed experts in church ministry, curriculum design, and leader training provided helpful evaluation and insight in the research and development of the project director’s curriculum.\r\n\r\nUsing this curriculum, I trained selected deacons during a five-session workshop held on a Friday evening and Saturday morning. Research in the field of study revealed a consensus for six basic deacon ministry competencies: benevolence, conflict resolution, evangelism, family ministry, ordinances, and partnering with the pastor. Significant gaps exist between, on the one hand, the emphasis placed on developing leadership qualities and skills during Capuchin friars’ formation and, on the other, the degree to which such skills are called for in educational administrative ministries. In support of these claims, I apply Richard Osmer’s method of descriptive-empirical analysis – examining experience, tradition, and pastoral response – to a case study involving the experience of Capuchin principals in Ethiopia. Based on a close examination of their experiences, I recommend the institutionalization of programmatic educational leadership training modules for friar school principals. I also call for changes in the friars’ initial and ongoing formation programs to increase the quality of educational leadership and managerial skills in order to raise their leadership qualities and make them more capable of executing their responsibilities. Importance of positive psychology in the spiritual journey is also studied. The interview responses have guided the development of this thesis in this direction. Project"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Nevers, Wilma Yvonne"],"subject_tesim":["Church and social problems","Ministry","Servant leadership","Psychotherapy","Clergy--Mental health"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This Doctor of Ministry integrated portfolio presents a summary of key insights, themes and findings arising from an exploration of Christian leadership, with particular reference to the authors’ own ministry context as Director of the Tyndale Wellness Centre (TWC). The exploration includes a contextual analysis, literature review, biblical reflection, and the author’s personal reflection on lived experiences that led to a servant-leader philosophy of Christian leadership. The analysis informed the design and implementation of a field research project: Training Ministry Leaders Towards Supportive Psychotherapy Referrals to Tyndale Wellness Centre. The project addressed an identified need to help Christian ministry leaders learn how to support their members with mental health problems and refer them for psychotherapy. A training program was developed and piloted with nine ministry leaders and the outcomes analyzed. Findings indicated an overall increase in participants’ understanding of mental health, the importance of self-care, the nature of spiritually integrated psychotherapy and how to make supportive referrals. A recurrent theme in the research analysis was participants’ concern about clergy mental health as much as that of their members. The author used the Quipping Program Model comprised of four lessons. Lesson one explained the role and work of the Holy Spirit from John's Gospel. Lesson two explained the decision of salvation. Lesson three explained the decision of sanctification. Lesson four guided the counselors through practical application. The leadership structure at Blue Creek Baptist Church was distorted, undefined, and unbiblical. Therefore, Blue Creek Baptist Church found itself at a pivotal moment. Will the church adopt a new leadership structure that works for Blue Creek Baptist Church both now and in the future, or will the church refuse to adopt a new leadership structure and continue in a state of apathy and mediocrity? The purpose of this project was to develop a leadership organizational strategy for Blue Creek Baptist Church, Perry, Florida, by completing research, conducting interviews, and enlisting input from key individuals in the area of leadership structures. The project director believed that implementing this strategy would help Blue Creek Baptist Church establish a new and more effective leadership structure that would serve Blue Creek Baptist Church for years to come. In a church steeped in a culture led by dictators for generations, the pastor can quickly become an authoritarian figure. However, in light of the gospel, all who follow Jesus ought to become servants. This project asserts and tests that servant leadership is a key factor between Burmese Christians and congregations in the USA as they work to understand the challenges of immigrant life.This project is a case study that will look at the current situation in Burma through the eyes of Christian immigrants to the USA. The first chapter goes into great detail of the context of not only the church, but also the surrounding community. By way of understanding the context of the church and community, one can see the great need for biblical servant leaders as well as determine whether this project is helpful to you in your context. Chapter two intently researches the biblical foundation of the office of deacon, as well as argues for the role of the deacon to be one who leads, as well as one who serves. The third chapter narrows its scope to argue for a shared leadership model among the servant leader deacons of any given church. Chapter four is the implementing of the project itself. It includes all that is needed to duplicate the project at your church, such as the four-session training material, as well as how I recruited participants, developed the curriculum, and taught the curriculum. The final chapter is simply personal evaluation of the strengths and weaknesses of the project. I discuss things that I learned as a result of the project, things that went well as well as some things that I should have done differently.
