Such understanding took concrete form when twelve people undertook a structured project involving group study, journaling, and direct involvement with the homeless and their advocates.  A proposal calling for church involvement with the homeless evolved.  The strength of the project/study arose out of one constant: exploring the relationship between spirituality and servanthood. Some are gifted to be seekers of the gifted.  The challenge is to mobilize these steward-seekers, who can open doors to service, especially at the regional levels of the church.  The method used was to design interventions to test this theory in a particular regional body for several months, after studying the dynamics of volunteerism, biblical teaching, tradition, and current studies in the sociology of groups. Korean scholars to date follow an old tradition which derives 'diakonos' from 'dia' (through) and 'konis' (dust.)  But this derivation is a case of confusion of 'diakonio' (pulvere, to in the dust) with 'diakoneo' (to serve.)  The author exegetes Acts 6 discussing the Grecian Jews, the Hebrews, and the Samaritans. Priest's tend to emphasize the ordering and meaning giving functions, while laity emphasize the serving function.  Clergy exercise leadership in the ministries of worship, education, and pastoral care.  Laity lead in the ministries of stewardship, evangelism, and service. The nature of volunteerism and the theological basis for ministry were researched.  The project involved a two-sided emphasis.  First, a computerized ministry file was developed for aiding church leaders in discovering available volunteers.  Secondly, a ministries notebook was developed to aid potential volunteers in discovering available ministry positions.  A procedure was implemented for the use of both tools. The first section is biblical theology, a survey of leadership models in the Scripture, with a view to discerning the ways God has used men and women in the biblical history to give leadership to his people.  Implications for the role of the pastor are drawn from these, with the Old Testament 'man of God' and Jesus' 'servant' and 'shepherd' models emerging as formative. The concern for service carries out the practices of the Society of Friends (Quakers).  The question studied was the effects of requiring community service.  Pre and post test measures were taken using instruments to measure self-esteem, social and personal responsibility.  Interview and group discussion were used to gather data.  The students in this study showed a significant increase in social and personal responsibility.  Self-esteem did not change significantly. In chapter one he describes the church, using both subjective and objective indicators ro renewal.  In chapter two he gives a theological foundation based on Jesus as servant.  In chapter three he presents a design for renewal that includes a sermon series, education class series, and a retreat.  Chapter four is an evaluation. Results were mixed.  To an extent the church developed a spirit of risk and a vision of community service.
