The participants engaged in practical service for a period of six months. The goal was to discover any change in how they applied their understanding of their calling through service opportunities. One of the lessons that emerged is that the church needs to be nurtured by missional habits. This project followed the equipping program model. The project director conducted biblical research and developed materials to train a group of deacons to assist the pastoral staff in selected components of congregational care. Interviews were recorded, transcribed, and analyzed in order to understand the intrinsic and relational variables contributing to their service duration. Themes identified were (1) faith and belief as a framework, (2) personal and relational growth, and (3) growth mindset. A conceptual model of mindset appeared that served commitment and intent. This model is discussed, along with integration and other research models. A worship pastor has the opportunity to shape the church and strengthen the effectiveness of its mission. First, the shepherd metaphor and shepherd leadership were examined. Second, an exploration of servant leadership and transformational leadership was conducted. Finally, interviews with eight worship pastors were conducted to determine how they perceive their leadership and how they lead. The author analyzed data by the practical theology method of mutual critical correlation. Volunteers expressed a value for experiencing a sense of belonging, welcoming new persons onto ministry teams, experiencing a sense of shared leadership, the importance of pastoral leadership, and strong biblical motivations for ministry. In the first session, the director explored the meaning of servant leadership. In session two, he examined Old and New Testament models of servant leadership. In session three, the project director equipped the participants in the specific servant leadership ministries of encouragement and peacemaking. The survey was conducted before and after the training program among 30 new church members and 30 lay leaders. Each church implemented strengths training after participating in a Gallup Member Engagement Survey (ME25). Mixed methods grounded theory research was used to compare the statistical data from each survey result to the qualitative data obtained from interviews of church members.
