Away from their families and centers of spiritual formation, young adults face tremendous ethical pressures from their peers and often find themselves without the necessary tools to navigate those challenges. This study utilized a qualitative design using semi-structured interviews with eight young adults who not only navigated those challenges, but also encouraged their peers toward a more biblical worldview resulting in ethical behavioral change. The interview analysis concluded that their experience of spiritual formation in their teenage years was a significant component for them upholding biblical sexual ethics in college and remaining in church later. The literature review focused on three key areas to understand the biblical sexual ethic and its subsequent development in adolescents: Modern commentary and exegesis of 1 Corinthians 6:12-20, The Greco-Roman context and ancient sexual ethic, and systems theory and its implications for parenting. This study found that adolescents described social pressure in four areas: humor, experimentation, overt challenge, and transactional behavior. Because of these challenges this study concluded that there are three necessary components to sustain healthy spiritual formation in adolescents for them to uphold biblical ethics: courageous clarity, heart-centered intentionality, and calm adaptability. In light of these elements, this study identified best practices for parents and youth leaders that contribute to lasting spiritual formation in youth."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"related_url_tesim":["https://www.covenantlibrary.org/etd/2024/Royes_David_DMin_2024.pdf"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["admin_set/default-default-approving","admin_set/default-default-depositing","admin_set/default-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Default Admin Set"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["library@covenantseminary.edu"],"_version_":1829686010538098688,"timestamp":"2025-04-17T21:15:55.338Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-13T19:30:01Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:38:06Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"ce47a865-1289-46e2-add4-72a1346b894f","accessControl_ssim":["694f78ef-a607-4282-8203-d93d95f9ebe3"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["A response to pastor-client sexual relations"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-13T19:29:59Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:02:51Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["19264b67-3084-44e7-9650-20411752c348"],"hasLease_ssim":["e98a2366-5b9e-4ed7-a417-893f8df6693d"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Chicago Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["1980"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Ann Bartram"],"publisher_tesim":["Chicago Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Sex--Religious aspects--Christianity","Sexual ethics","Pastoral counseling"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["None"],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Chicago Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["2ed862c2-32c4-448b-95c8-4a58c3d74b5b"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791134624953401344,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:38:09.044Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T17:13:02Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:36:01Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"5c13d70c-22b9-4e56-8b59-9a047a4b661c","accessControl_ssim":["0831d060-0b9d-407e-a97d-3b3b9114f40e"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Reshaping Contemporary Premarital Relationship in the Church Context in accordance with the Biblical View of courtship and marriage"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T17:13:00Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T00:50:26Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["d49f9c23-8826-4848-bba8-bda0a9871629"],"hasLease_ssim":["ce1ac65c-399d-473d-bdbf-f440ea312270"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Logos Evangelical Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Kuo-Liang Lin"],"year_tesim":["2016"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Ming Yu Chen"],"publisher_tesim":["Logos Evangelical Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Sexual ethics","Unmarried couples","Marriage--Religious aspects--Christianity"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This dissertation will examine to understand God's design of gender, and the essence of courtship and marriage through the interpretation of the Biblical accounts to explore the marriage. The unorthodox Christian viewpoint favors a revisionist theology that redefines homosexual practice as ordained by God and therefore morally acceptable. What makes these churches safe and welcoming for those seeking to gain victory over same-sex attractions and behaviors? And second, to convince church leaders that our churches need to become the kind of churches that are effective in ministering to male homosexual strugglers. A confidential survey methodology was used in asking both male strugglers and active church members their perspective on their church's attitudes and actions as it related to ministering to and discipling male strugglers. The participating churches were chosen based upon the entire church body having embraced the ministry to those who were struggling and desiring assistance out of homosexuality or same-sex attraction. The churches were located in Texas, Indiana, and Virginia. The results of this study highlight that effective churches are: 1) welcoming and safe environments for those who are seeking assistance out of homosexuality, 2) exhibiting an attitude of equality throughout the congregation that the sin of homosexuality is treated as a sin not the greatest sin, 3) demonstrating empathy by a variety of church members engaged in relationship with strugglers counseling them to a place of holiness through discipleship, and that those churches 4) are committed to the equipping and training of heterosexual men to minister alongside each of the strugglers. Results were validated by the survey answers provided by the male strugglers as compared with active church members. In summary, the study brings to light that effective churches have created a welcoming and safe culture by demonstrating equality, empathy, engagement and education in its ministry to male homosexual strugglers."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Dallas Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["8322f611-a593-413a-8bcd-0011fba52dc7"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791129833399386112,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:21:59.461Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T12:40:41Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:57:06Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"9f2c524d-8424-4c46-a614-68d41d6c2758","accessControl_ssim":["42b1af4f-d08e-43c5-956a-9a802968fcd0"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Holy people, holy sex: a critical analysis of the United Methodist Church's doctrine on homosexuality through theological anthropology"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T12:40:40Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T02:47:01Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["f475f5cc-23cf-4eb8-a833-80dda83c1ebd"],"hasLease_ssim":["d2ebf297-099a-413e-b24f-884bce0e1746"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Hood Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Trevor Eppehimer"],"year_tesim":["2009"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Timothy S Moore"],"keyword_tesim":["Eschatology--Christianity--History of doctrines","United Methodist Church--Social teachings"],"publisher_tesim":["Hood Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Church and social problems--Methodist Church","Theological anthropology--Christianity--History of doctrines","Sexual ethics","United Methodist Church--Doctrine","Homosexuality","Eschatology","Christianity"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["Like many Protestant denominations since the 1970s, the United Methodist Church has struggled to address the issue of homosexuality and homosexual practice. Through these debates, primarily at its quadrennial gatherings, the church has clarified its theology and established its doctrinal standards. However, a disjunction has occurred within the church's theological anthropology. When speaking more generally about theology, the church relies upon one construction of theological anthropology. When speaking about human sexuality and homosexuality, the church relies upon a second, divergent theological anthropology. If it is the case that the church relies upon a second, divergent theological anthropology when speaking about homosexuality and homosexual practice, then its doctrine on homosexuality and homosexual practice is suspect and needs revision. To resolve this disjunction and provide this revision, the church must (1) identify the divergent theological anthropology currently used in its discussion of homosexuality and homosexual practice and (2) replace that divergent theological anthropology with an alternative, more doctrinally consistent theological anthropology. This more doctrinally consistent theological anthropology is the Eschaton Adam. The following thesis argues that this more doctrinally consistent theological anthropology offers the church a new avenue, potentially enabling the denomination to pursue theological precision and to gain greater denominational consensus on the contentious issues of homosexuality and homosexual practice. Out of this thesis, a project was created to test the theory that a disjunction was present and that substituting one theological anthropology for another would alter church doctrine, lay and clergy perceptions of that doctrine, and potentially supply the church with a viable way forward to resolve this persisting doctrinal problem of how adequately to address homosexuality and homosexual practice."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791128273757929472,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T06:57:12.072Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":20,"label":"Unknown"},{"value":"D.Min.
