This phenomenological, qualitative study presents a curriculum that addresses shame and equips in contemplative prayer, scripture meditation, and soul care relationships to develop shame resilience. Twelve men and women participated in a spiritual formation group and retreat. All reported a noticeable and transformative increase in shame resiliance, and the ability to develop ongoing resilience strategies. The project was conducted as a twelve-week, weekly small group experience. Specifically considered in this dissertation are the shame wounds of men. The degree of impact for this project was determined by five goals. The results conclude that HCG does positively impact the inner healing of men. The project focused on the identification, adaptation, utilization and analysis of common spiritual direction methods to facilitate healing and restoration in the life of urban African American women of varying ages and backgrounds who had experienced a crisis that impacted their spirituality. Using a qualitative case study methodology, the participants attended a 13-week program that utilized a variety of spiritual direction methods and learning tools. The project helped the participants re-shape their theology, re-interpret scripture, and re-image God. Healing was initiated through release of shame, forgiveness, empowerment, and reawakened spirituality. He used three shame reduction techniques -- psychoeducation, self-affirmation, and affirmation by others -- during a twelve-week study of 9 males participating in a church-based, Christ-centered Twelve-Step program.  The Internalized Shame Scale measured a statistically significant reduction of shame levels, but the Test of Self-Conscious Affect-3 did not.  The Sexuality Survey did not measure a statistically significant reduction in the incidence of sexually addictive behavior.
