Many small LCMS churches are not growing in a variety of areas.  The author researched helping churches by visiting eleven churches and giving them suggestions.  He then revisited the churches three months later to evaluate growth.  Eight churches grew in a variety of ways, two were stagnant, and one closed. New life may come from a variety of sources, not the least of which is local mission. When a congregations reaches out, individually and corporately, it may find the vitality that eluded it while it was searching within. A relational model applied to mission is oriented toward partnership and is never hierarchical. Four such congregations, each more than 30 years old, have grown from an average worship attendance of fewer than 80 to an average of more than 125 within a 10-year period. The project devises and administers a Turnaround Church Survey for use in interviewing pastors and lay leaders in these congregations. Twelve factors emerge as significant in the growth of these churches: visionary leadership, quality in music and worship, willingness to change, warm reception of visitors, attendance at growth seminars, removal of obstacles, equipping of laypersons for ministry, prayer, tithing, spiritual renewal, addition of staff, and intentional
