Chapter one describes the church setting, defines the project, and provides rationale for this work. Chapter two examines Mal 1:6-2:9 and the book of Acts as representative Old and New Testament passages regarding pastoral leadership and the nature of the church.  Chapter three examines contemporary writings on leadership and the family church and presents a pastoral leadership style for such churches. Chapter four describes the intervention and testing used in the project: sermons and meetings, questionnaires and interviews.  Chapter five analyzes the results of the testing using both subjective and objective evaluations.  It also reviews and comments on the process followed in this project. Then, an evaluation of the small town and a local church congregation is elaborately chronicled through a series of dialogues and reflective processes. Many small church pastors are frustrated as they witness the decline of the small church. However, many of these pastors continue using preaching models that seem insufficient to address the issues in the small church, primarily the issue of conflict resistance. This thesis proposes that an alternative preaching model is needed in the small church, particularly one with conflict and complexity built into the preaching model, for the purpose of challenging the small church to embrace conflict so that it might be transformed. This is important to the field of homiletics because it seeks to demonstrate a narrative conflictual model of preaching in an institution that regularly resists conflict. The thesis is supported by theory primarily provided by Lyle Schaller and Eugene Lowry. Using liberation theology, new homiletic theories and autobiography, this paper will explore some of the complexities of preacher formation. First Baptist Church of Warsaw, IN developed a Diagnostic Test to diagnose specific needs.  Using this information the church developed a two-year program, evaluated it with a follow-up questionnaire, verifying the program had met specific needs. These strategies were implemented in one of the selected five churches.
