The project methodology consisted of twelve basic training sessions that enabled participants to build trust with each other, to acquire confidence in sharing their own faith stories as part of evangelism and to be more aware and responsible for fulfilling the stated mission of the church. It also demonstrates the value of a district plan to provide planning consultations as a resource to the churches. The judicatory executive, in this case the district superintendent, is a catalyst in bringing small membership churches to use a planning process to direct their ministry. The churches in the project planned new ministries for the coming year. The district superintendent is a key catalyst in the model.  This document is part of a larger design in which the district superintendency is the bonding agent of denominational vitalization.  The model consists of three district events designed for small membership congregations: confirmation retreat; Sunday school workshop and rally; and mission project in Haiti. All three events were designed by laity and clergy persons from small membership churches in the district with assistance from district and conference staff persons. This methodology was entered into after all other possibilities were deemed unsuitable.  It is a pattern of using a regular rotation of lay speakers and has lasted for four years. This project gave a forum for writers in the Kansas City Kansas Baptist Association.  Of the pool of forty-three eligible churches and missions at the beginning of the project, nine participated.  While the project was designed to indicate success with eight participants, not only was this goal surpassed but others have indicated a desire to participate at a later time.  A journal was produced with editing at a later time. In today's economy a full-time priest serving one altar places severe demands on these congregations.  As small churches over-invest financially in clergy deployment they also over-invest emotionally.  An atmosphere is created where clergy are expected to over-function to match the high level of investment.  The stresses caused by this phenomena are causing clergy 'burn-out' while these small cures are becoming harder to fill.  The project/thesis explores the connection between financial over-investment and the emotional expectations to over-function. Pastors assigned to small town and rural churches who have little or no background in small town culture go through a culture shock akin to those who are serving in a foreign land.  This project was designed to introduce the culture and values of the small town and help participants identify the issues with which people in these communities are dealing.  By using the accumulated knowledge and experience of participants and the writings of rural sociologists, several key issues were identified during this three-day workshop and solutions were established collectively.
