They suggest that the practice of communal Bible study may be the key to re-forming the witness of local congregations. This project applies a missional hermeneutic, through the use of particular study questions, to the practice of communal Bible study in a local congregation. Discoveries made by participants are consistent with a 'missional church' understanding. Five members of a small group (Growth Group) in a local church has been interviewed about their experiences after one year of participation of the group. This actual group has also been compared with two other small group models: recovery groups and covenant discipleship groups. Using video observation and participant interviews, this study explores the impact of leadership, a formational method of Bible study, the interlacing power of stories, prayer, conversation, and silence, in order to determine the efficacy of this small group model. Results showed a strong correlation between seventeen team behaviors and seven outreach activities for 502 respondents in nine small group ministries.  Men correlated 25% better than women, and leaders and participants correlated similarly. Overall, higher team competence and purpose led to higher outreach activity. In the experimental phase, test leaders from men's groups trained in key team and purpose competencies applied these actions to their groups.
