This thesis challenges dominant narratives that assume that queer folk either abandon religion or escape to urban centers. Drawing heavily from qualitative data obtained from surveying and interviewing 12 queer Christians with lived experience within rural contexts, this study reveals how faith is sustained, reimagined, and reinterpreted despite exclusion, spiritual trauma, and in many cases limited access to affirming communities. Integrating queer and liberation theology as well as sociological analysis of rural religious and social contexts, this project emphasizes lived experience as a source of theological wisdom. The respondents speak to enduring relationships with God, separating divine constancy with failure of the religious institution, and engaging in reinterpretations through a queer lens that is rooted in love, justice, grace, and Jesus’ message.\r\n\r\nThe findings shine a light on how rural dynamics, especially the heightened visibility, social policing, and the centralized role of the church as a community institution, increase both the risks of exclusion but also speak to the transformative power of affirmation. Even with varying relationships to organized religion, all respondents shared a sustained faith commitment and a desire to ethically engage scripture, which is shaped by resilience and a deep hope for transformation among the church. At the same time churches are taking this transactional approach, “none” is the fastest growing religion in the United States marking the church’s ongoing decline. In their work we: a) hear from predominantly white congregations’ leaders in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, about how they and their congregations see their work with people living in poverty, b) engage in a theological dialogue with multiple researchers on what the Bible has to say about poverty in Deuteronomy, Ruth, the Prophets, and the Parables of Jesus, c) examine two current movements to get congregations out of their buildings and into their communities, d) look at the relational models that have influenced my secular work in poverty, and e) hear from two leaders in African American and Latino churches about how they engage with people living in poverty. Project"],"creator_tesim":["Fees, Sandra Ruth"],"subject_tesim":["Social justice","Unitarian Universalist Churches","Preaching"],"abstract_tesim":["“Metaphor as Muse: How Preaching Incarnates the Religious Ethos” is a rhetorical analysis of metaphors used in preaching that is designed to reveal the trajectory of Unitarian Universalist values. The study, grounded in linguistics and language theory, examines fifty contemporary and denominationally significant sermons delivered over a ten-year period. The findings reveal that the sermon metaphors reflect the faith’s basic values, but they do so in ways that are conflictual. The metaphors are less prevalent, more commonplace, and more narrowly interpreted than might be expected in Unitarian Universalist preaching. Seven clergypersons were interviewed, and nine clergypersons completed the clergy survey. Two of the nine surveys were from Spanish-speaking pastors and these surveys were translated into English. Forty-four LGBTQ lay people completed the lay survey. One of the lay surveys was from a Spanish-speaking individual and it was translated into English. A word analysis was performed on the interviews and the surveys to identify frequently used terms related to strategies of pastoral care. The report combines information on the challenges and celebrations and strategies to fulfill the pastoral care needs as indicated by the survey and interview participants. Oftentimes the pastor and lay leadership are not equipped with the skills sets and gifts needed to effect needed change…For this project, I chose to focus on Christian practices, which are good, life giving and intrinsic to the life of faith…Christian practices contribute to growth and revitalization in churches when engaged as individuals and communally. Practices can help us to develop narratives that shape our identity, sense of purpose and mission. A lack of space limits the number of student seats available, while tuition costs restrict access to families able to afford sky-high rates. Meanwhile, childcare teachers are paid low salaries for their services, and children living in poverty fall farther and farther behind. Such a challenge threatens not only a child’s livelihood, but also the congregation’s vision “that all may know God’s love.” This project will examine how the principles of adaptive leadership might reframe the congregation’s missiological understanding and practices via the work of education. Through a mixed-methods approach combining quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews, the researcher implemented a six-week emotional intelligence program for fifteen African American high school students. The intervention consisted of two community excursions (a toy distribution service project and a bowling event) and four weekly coaching sessions focused on self-awareness, empathy, assertiveness, and heart-based decision-making.\r\n\r\nThe research was grounded in both theological and theoretical frameworks that emphasized the heart as the center of meaningful behavioral change, aligning with emotional intelligence principles. Data collection included pre- and post-intervention surveys, interviews, participant journaling, direct observation, and focus groups. Results demonstrated significant improvements in participants' decision-making approaches, with measurable growth in analytical thinking, reduced reliance on external validation, and increased decision confidence. Behavioral observations revealed enhanced social skills, empathy, and leadership emergence.\r\n\r\nThe findings suggest that developing emotional intelligence provides youth with effective tools to process trauma and make better decisions. This improvement was particularly evident in the dramatic increase in participant engagement between the first and second excursions. Isaiah","Social justice"],"abstract_tesim":["This thesis considers whether Isaiah portrays divine spirit as an agent of societal justice. Mišpāṭ, ṣədāqâ, ṣedeq, and rûaḥ all occur frequently in the book of Isaiah. Some occurrences of mišpāṭ, ṣədāqâ, and ṣedeq refer to societal justice, specifically to right conduct with respect to the poor and needy members of the community. As we will observe in the chapters that follow, Isaiah scholarship has noted the importance of societal justice as a major theme of the book evidenced, in particular, in the opening chapters. While not every occurrence of rûaḥ in Isaiah refers to divine spirit, i.e., the invisible activity of God in the midst of his people, a number of its occurrences do have this meaning. There are six texts in Isaiah (4:2–6; 11:1–9; 28:5–6; 32:15–20; 42:1–9; 61:1–11) where mišpāṭ, ṣədāqâ, and/or ṣedeq may relate to societal justice and occur in close proximity to rûaḥ. This thesis considers each of these six texts to determine (1) whether it refers to divine spirit, (2) whether it refers to societal justice as reflected in concern for the poor and needy, and (3) the relationship between divine spirit and societal justice in each text.\r\n\r\nFollowing chapters of introduction, literature review, and methodology, the fourth chapter contains a lexical analysis of mišpāṭ, ṣədāqâ, ṣedeq, and rûaḥ. The fifth chapter contains a historical-grammatical exegesis of the six texts seeking to answer the three questions set out above. Chapter six states the thesis’s conclusions.\r\n\r\nThis thesis finds that all six texts speak of divine spirit. In some texts (11:1–9; 32:15–20; 42:1–9; 61:1–11) this conclusion is straightforward as rûaḥ is described as coming from the Lord upon a person or people. Isaiah 4:4 instead speaks of the Lord effecting a purifying judgment by means of “a spirit of judgment” and “a spirit of burning.” In Isaiah 28:5–6 the Lord himself becomes “a spirit of justice” to the one who exercises judgment.\r\n\r\nThe thesis also finds that all six texts with the exception of Isaiah 42:1–9 clearly or likely speak of societal justice as seen in concern for the poor and needy. The vocabulary and context of Isaiah 11:1–9 and 32:15–20 show that these texts clearly refer to societal justice. While the distinctive vocabulary of societal justice is lacking in Isaiah 4:2–6 and 28:5–6, the context within which these texts appear makes it likely that they refer to societal justice. Isaiah 61:1–11 presents a vision of future shalom which, in view of its context and vocabulary, likely includes societal justice. Isaiah 42:1–9’s lack of distinctive vocabulary and its implied audience and literary context make it unlikely that it refers to societal justice. \r\n\r\nFive of the texts (11:1–9; 28:5–6; 32:15–20; 42:1–9; 61:1–11) show a direct relationship between divine spirit and whatever from of “justice” is in view in the text.
