Work with the parish's Christian Service Task Force prompted research leading to the use of a pastoral letter by Bishop Howard Hubbard, and to Robert Greenleaf's Servant leadership. A synthesis of these sources produced a role description of the parish priest as that of affirming, coordinating and facilitating the lay ministry by fulfilling a 'first among equals' role in the context of the parish council. The character of a congregation is determined by its spirituality and social justice relevance.  The hypothesis is if members of a congregation understand the mandates of the gospel, they will develop a social justice consciousness.  The research methodology is a pre-test questionnaire that quantifies their understanding.  Participants will attend a four-week program focusing on the liberation message as a critical component of social activism. It is based on principles of practical theology, using experiences of workers with Servants to Asia's Urban Poor, partnering with squatters in metro-Manila, Philippines.  These experiences are brought into critical correlation with the Christian tradition and the context of the urban poor. Theology should speak to that which we hold most cherished together.  Our congregations need to create a common, shared theology that goes beyond the little boxes of post enlightenment belief with which our love for individualism has left us.  We need a way to create a new normative theology in each congregation that helps us collectively formulate spiritual reasons for what we do, at once both accessible to us as individuals, but definitive enough so that each congregation could refer to that theology as a foundation from which to make justice.  The thesis of this project is that a shared leadership curriculum would begin to reinvigorate our foundational purpose and drive out congregations toward theologically grounded action.  I propose that the curriculum explore answers to several questions of ultimate purpose: 1) What is the nature of hope? 2) What is our response to racism and oppression? 3) What is the best response to suffering? 4) What is our individual and collective purpose?  The overall learning goal of this curriculum is heuristic: To help a group of people think theologically in community and this empower their religious life.  Specifically, this curriculum is to be used by leadership groups in a congregation as a guide to think generatively and theologically about their work.
