Spiritual gifts are expressed and may be found in a variety of levels of conscious behavior. The project offers a community model for discernment of gifts as a balance between the subjectivity of spiritual gifts inventories and the objective psychological implications of type theory. Effective spiritual direction can be done in the local church through the sermon.  Preaching as spiritual direction differs significantly from preaching as pastoral care.  The author presents research leading to a definition of preaching as spiritual direction.  In addition, the author presents a pragmatic application of the theory to crafting sermons which have spiritual direction as the principal aim.
