Postmodern Presbyterians long for more balance, order, community, and intimacy with God. The thesis of this project is that these Benedictine practices can provide balance, order, community, and intimacy with God for Presbyterian faith. The project followed the lives of eight Christian lay persons as they sought to embody Benedictine practices over a period of thirteen weeks. Qualitative research methods were used, principally through taped interviews. The research question is: 'What is a better method to help members discover and use their spiritual gifts to increase participation in ministry?' This project includes: 1) a four-week course on the nature and purpose of spiritual gifts;  2) a Christ-centered spiritual gift inventory;  3) an interest inventory;  4) a spiritual gift development program. This project shows that spiritual direction enhances the marriages of five couples in a suburb of Omaha, Nebraska, as they share their experiences of God with each other.
