Chapter Two presents a description of the physiological and psychological effects of stress. Effective coping mechanisms and stress management techniques are evaluated. Chapter Three reviews the biblical concept of prayer and the implications of spiritual development for Post-traumatic Stress Disorder victims. Attention is drawn to the response of God to prayers of petition.Chapter Four reviews theological perspectives which pertain to Intensive Journal Writing as a psychological and spiritual development resource. As the revealed activity of God becomes the work of redemption, healing activity is defined.Chapter Five presents the Intensive Journal Writing technique of Ira Progoff. The use of this Journal Writing system as a part of a Post-traumatic Stress Disorder Rehabilitation Program is described. Special consideration is given to the spiritual dimension of journal development.Chapter Six demonstrates that Intensive Journal Writing is a productive means of spiritual development. The practice of catechetical preaching is now in decline, both in quality and quantity.Chapter Two deals with the problems of catechetical preaching. It is often repetitious from year to year and therefore boring. Preachers sometimes brings theological presuppositions to their preaching that are different from the views expressed by the Heidelberg Catechism. Chapter Three gives us reasons why catechetical preaching can still be useful and relevant. The Heidelberg Catechism provides us with a useful framework of thought and confession. Its emphasis on the promises of God can be a very effective antidote to legalism and cold orthodoxy. Chapter Four studies and critiques the approaches to catechetical preaching of Peter Y. After surveying the perceived spiritual formation needs of students in one seminary, four teaching/learning activities were designed and implemented.  Although the whole project was carried out within a period of only eight weeks, there was a favorable response to the learning experiences and some progress in the use of spiritual disciplines was revealed. The objective is to assist the adult student in approaching John Wesley's contribution to spiritual growth and help him utilize the methods and means offered.  An adult Free Methodist Sunday school class served as the field setting for a pretest inventory, three lessons, posttest inventory, and interview.  Strengths and needs from the pretest determined the lessons' focuses. The method which this project follows is experiential and mystagogical.  The project concludes that significant growth in spiritual formation can and does take place in the worship service. Second, initial responses of long-time members differed significantly from initial resonses of 'beginners in faith'. Third, lay leaders often carry leadership burdens which sometimes hinder their ability to participate fully in worship.  Fourth, the person of the pastor plays a large role in the spiritual formation of the congregation. Worship is re-structured; a vocational group is formed; two study groups are offered; and adminsitration is modified, beginning with the process of adopting a congregational mission statement.
