Working within the paradigm of the Quaker listening model, as described by activist and educator Parker J. Palmer and others, the intentional use of a spiritually based therapeutic listening model is an effective tool used by the Registered Nurse (RN) in working with patients and their families in making decisions in critical care settings. These practices allow him/her to courageously navigate the seasons of ministry and bounce back from stressful experiences. The six-week curriculum intervention for clinical pastoral education participants involved control and intervention groups. It focused on five spiritual resiliency themes (community, hope, sound of the genuine, meditation, stewardship) and related spiritual resiliency practices. Research methods included quantitative and qualitative instruments. Post-training evaluation scores evidenced participants were empowered by a greater understanding of the biblical/theological foundations and exploration of practices. At the time of the fieldwork the researcher had been unchurched for over three years. As the unchurched demographic continues to grow, their reasons for severing ties with their local churches are explored. The hypothesis espousers that interacting with the unchurched will provide insights into ways to spiritually engage them. Fifteen unchurched women were interviewed for this qualitative, ethnographic study. Three research questions guided this study: How do Fellows alumni describe the formative practices of the Fellows Program? How do Fellows alumni describe the impact of their Fellows Program? How do Fellows alumni describe the role of the local congregation in their Fellows Program? Can Christians be taught to be more aware of God's guidance when doing acts of compassion? This qualitative action research project examined this question by introducing traditional United Methodists to a new method of spiritual formation, Compassion Awareness Training (CAT). The project contained six CAT sessions and two implementation sessions. CAT sessions included instruction about compassion and listening to God, treasure maps of Spirit-inspired clues for a compassion event, and Wesleyan Quadrilateral based questions to clarify clues. It outlines a model for spiritual formation centered on being conformed to the image of Christ. Theoretical support ties spirituality to marital satisfaction, and subjectification to love for God and others. Measures include the DAS, SWBS, and qualitative questionnaires.
