The project director surveyed various strategic development methods and explored current trends in discipleship, noting what was most applicable tot he current church environment. The project director then built a strategic planning team and led them in the development of a discipleship strategy for First Baptist Church based upon research results in the area of basic discipleship competencies. The concept of the risen Christ as the beginning of the new creation was used to affect the participants' formation in four areas: care for material creation, care for our physical bodies, proper understanding of God-centered worship, and continual dependence on Christ our Shepherd. Participants were tested before and after the project and showed much of the desired formational improvement. The author created a curriculum for mothers exploring their faith. After independently engaging these offerings, they gathered in discussion groups to further explore the material. The offerings ranged from receiving a 'thought for the week' email to joining a spiritual formation group. There were 15 different offerings. The intended outcome was a shift in focus from the business of the church to the work of the Holy Spirit. More than half of the regular adult attenders participated. A wide range of artistic media was introduced into the worship, education and spiritual formation activities of the Gateway Christian Church, of Los Angeles, California. These media included the visual arts, drama, photography and multimedia presentations. The impact of the arts was evaluated through questionnaires, personal interviews and direct observations. Spiritual formation, as measured by increased hospitality and inclusiveness, was positively impacted by the project.
