Participatory Action Research (PAR) provides an intentional systematic approach for this endeavor. Nine cycles of planning, reflection, and practice of spiritual disciplines resulted in a gradual transformation among participants. Key elements of pastoral life are noted as inseparable from the process of spiritual formation: calling, commitment, community, and conflict. The change experienced during the research process became a catalyst for initiating spiritual formation processes for pastoral leaders. As the author recognized a growing spiritual maturity in his own life, he sought to ascertain if and how this was identifiable in the preaching event. The theory guiding this thesis is espoused in The Fully Alive Preacher by Mike Graves, which states 'if we want to become better preachers, we should first consider how we might become deeper persons.' The author found a symbiotic relationship between the spiritual maturity of the preacher and preaching. The thesis argues that a Wesleyan hermeneutic is better suited for teaching those who tend toward postmodernity thinking than is reformed theology. Lectio Divina can address issues of people today who are spiritually searching. The project consisted of introducing Lectio Divina to Nazarene evangelicals with a Wesleyan hermeneutic that bridges the gap between evangelicalism and monasticism. This study was undertaken as an exercise in practical theology, and a 'mutual critical conversation' model was employed.  The initial stage of the conversation was a historical, biblical, and theological investigation of the Sabbath.  The second stage of the conversation related the thematic elements of the Sabbath to leadership principles. A survey of forty-four questions was designed, tested and administered to study and evaluate the impact of spiritual formation would have on women who engage in the process that leads to character development. Moreover, this shows that the development of 'fruit of the spirit' together with practicing the spiritual disciplines is essential in the process of developing Christ-like character. Results from the study suggest that outdoor sacred space is an important locus for spiritual formation. Among the important themes that the group identified were: sacred presence, struggle, defining sacred space, response to the sacred, individual versus communal experience, and visibility and perception. It cannot be assumed that the pastor has completed his development, but further intentional effort must be pursued. This project developed a lesson plan for pastors in a small group setting which defined spiritual development, established three biblical elements of spiritual development and its theological foundation. The author researched the theoretical, sociological, theological, and biblical perspectives of spirituality with application. Also, the author presented diverse exercises to implement for spiritual development and incentives for engaging the process.
