Instead, it has tended to rely upon approaches which focus primarily on conveying information, especially that which is distinctive to Adventism, leaving spiritual formation to somehow occur as a by-product. This project proposes a practice-based approach to the process of preparing people for membership in the Seventh-day Adventist Church. This approach is primarily designed around spiritual practices, but it also provides for the full engagement of the church's fundamental doctrinal beliefs. Drawing from the works of Clifford Geertz, Alasdair MacIntyre, Craig Dykstra, Dorothy Bass, Miroslav Volf, and their colleagues, a model of spiritual practices is developed and explained. This model is then placed in conversation with approaches currently in use by Seventh-day Adventists. As a part of this dialogue, pastors in the Southeastern California Conference of Seventh-day Adventists are surveyed to surface areas of concurrence with, or resistance to, the idea of a practice-centered approach. Next, possibilities are explored for developing an approach that would suggest a list of practices central to Seventh-day Adventist experience, which, when engaged, would also provide a context for reflecting upon the fundamental points of church doctrine. Spiritually resilient people, however, use their God given strengths and faith resources to cope constructively with suffering.  This study proposes a four part homiletic method to enhance spiritual resilience focusing on the sermon's intention, desired response, flow/plot and congruence.  The method was tested by presenting a four-part sermon series to two groups. Instruction, small group experience, prayer and individual counseling was provided for the adults who lived at the shelter as well as the volunteers who served them there.  An aspect of each class included childhood development theories that were explained and which linked the spiritual journey of the adult to that of the child. Information on the spiritual, emotional and physiological development was presented in a variety of ways so the participants could begin to evaluate their current relationships with God, self and others in light of their experiences in the earliest stages of childhood. They also practiced new relational skills, ones compromised due to early childhood neglect and/or abuse. Yet many today neglect it.  This project provides one means of seeking to address this problem.  This research measured the value of training people to study the Bible, specifically whether developmental training in personal Bible study methods would improve student attitudes toward their personal Bible study.  It also measured whether the training would improve student habits in their personal Bible study. Following the development of the training course and the curriculum to be used, the research was designed to utilize a survey questionnaire constructed with a Likert-scale of response options.  It also included multiple-choice options, as well as reverse scored items.  The survey data were gathered for two class groups and a non-trained control group to increase the breadth of sample survey and comparison. The survey was used as a pre-test and post-test within the class groups, but only as a post-test with the control group.  Additional qualitative data were gathered through focus group feedback from each class group and instruments that utilized open-ended questions, specifically -- a Bible study inventory that was used as a pre-test and post-test and a self-reported post-course evaluation form.  This study found that the training was effective in improving the habits of Bible study for one class group.  It was also effective in improving student habits and skills of relating the Bible to one's life and world for one class group. Presents an interfaith model for how the teachings and practices of the Buddhist traditions might be utilized by Christians in their own spiritual development. This model is based on a 'Spiritual Formation Guidebook' designed around the framework of the Buddhist Noble Eightfold Path and including corresponding Christian insights. A sampling of laity, clergy, and seminary professors used the guidebook for one month and then provided their overwhelmingly positive evaluations. It takes a case study on an urban Chinese congregation in New York state with designed teaching material (six sessions) to be tested and evaluated as the method of research.  It concludes that Martin Luther's teaching on prayer is intertwined with his justification by faith and the Theology of the Cross.  Those who pray receive God's grace.
