Chapter 2 defines and describes the historical origin of spiritual formation beginning with the period of the Desert fathers and continuing through the modern day work of Richard J. Foster who have contributed to the understanding of the formation of spirituality and may continue to contribute in preventing missionary attrition. Chapter 3 examines missionaries' spiritual, psychological and physical statuses as well as different missionary generations that are distinct either in contribution to missions or to missionary attrition. Surveys have been conducted throughout seminaries and missions organizations in an effort to prevent and resolve issues of missionary attrition. Chapter 4 addresses issues of missionary attrition through spiritual formation in praxis during seminary and missions training tenure. It is written from the perspective of a local church pastor who addresses the struggle of making Christian maturity the goal of ministry. It is based on the writings of the Apostle Paul, who considered the maturity of Christians the test of the quality of his ministry. The primary question for a pastor is: How will Christians develop toward spiritual maturity? Four erroneous assumptions are addressed that can prevent growth to completion after conversion. A spiritual theology of maturity is built on a study of Paul's use fo the term teleios. Its etymology and usage are summarized to create a biblical theology of spiritual maturity. Then it is interpreted through the lens of systems theory, which emphasizes the interrelationships and interactions in the processes of growth. A literature review adds a broader perspective of Pauline categories for growth and maturity in Christ. Thus, a holistic view is offered which formulates the content and contexts necessary for development to maturity. The thesis material is then reformatted in a manual that is useful for laypeople. The series of lessons are formatted to provide an overview of Paul's view of maturity, while taking the persons through the processes of growth in Christ. It seeks to provide material that will develop persons in Christlikeness."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791131268207869952,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:44:47.802Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T08:09:43Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T02:16:47Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"29c2d04e-2dfc-4c6f-be8c-3db51779ae45","accessControl_ssim":["ca0b52f1-839c-4dd6-8e6f-4d50504b1a83"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Uncommon experience: vocational patterns in the Army chaplaincy"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T08:09:42Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T23:21:25Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["f1c4774f-5be6-453a-8d79-1551f8b61654"],"hasLease_ssim":["7744557f-edf8-4b2c-8a07-d875ccd4ae12"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Lewis A Parks"],"year_tesim":["2003"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. More and more individuals are giving importance to their personal spiritual experience. Simultaneously, such people are recognizing the value of usable patterns of spiritual formation from the history of Christian spirituality. These time-tested models are providing help in discovering the divine presence and identifying the quiet whispers of God in one's personal life as well as within the communities to which one belongs. Accepting a renewed quest of spirituality as part of our contemporary American society, this dissertation/project attempted to assist six men, from three distinct generations, in their everyday awareness of God. The pattern from the history of Christian spiritual formation under scrutiny was the 'Spiritual Exercises' written in the 16th century by Ignatius Loyola. From for 12 weeks, September 1 through November 30, six Presbyterian men from the same parish entered into the Exercises. The primary resource was 'Choosing Christ in the World: Directing the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius Loyola According to Annotation Eighteen and Nineteen' by Joseph Tetlow, S.J. During the 90 days each participant followed a daily sequence of prayer and reflection adapted from the Spiritual Exercises. Individually, the retreatants met twice a month with the retreat director/dissertation author and once a month gathered together as a group. Written journal entries composed during the experience, one-on-one meetings with the retreat director/author and self-evaluations completed by the participants at the beginning and conclusion of the project provide the basis to identify affect (emotions) and effect (behaviors) influenced by the experience with the Exercises. The author also utilized the work of William Straus and Neil Howe, 'Generations: The History of America's Future, 1584 to 2069' to provide generational context and identify influences."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["San Francisco Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["38714359-d032-4ed0-ae3f-cb82c8f65a92"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799715388515155968,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T01:45:42.868Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":444,"label":"Unknown"},{"value":"D.Min.
