He developed a liturgy to provide a guide for the nine new groups.  He promoted this healing support group possibility within the local church and larger community and conducted a dedication service following the training. The hypothesis is that within the disciplined practice of pastoral psychotherapy, experiences of a religious quality emerge in ways which effect significant change and healing in a person's emotional life.  The project of defining and using a model of pastoral psychotherapy is conceived as a theological appropriation of a secular theory of psychotherapy as practiced in clinical cases of pastoral psychotherapy. It also examines the healing impact of Saint Ignatius Loyola's Spiritual Exercises on a select group of participants from within the theological diagnostic framework of the Ignatian guidelines for discerning spirits. Two competing contextual settings for giving and making the Spiritual Exercises, the 'at-home' model and the 'retreat house' model, vie to answer the central question: Which contextual setting better produces long-term healing, affecting the heart and behavior of the retreatant?
