The project focused on the identification, adaptation, utilization and analysis of common spiritual direction methods to facilitate healing and restoration in the life of urban African American women of varying ages and backgrounds who had experienced a crisis that impacted their spirituality. Using a qualitative case study methodology, the participants attended a 13-week program that utilized a variety of spiritual direction methods and learning tools. The project helped the participants re-shape their theology, re-interpret scripture, and re-image God. The particular focus of the paper is finding resources to deal with remaining trauma after the conflict has been officially declared settled. This paper offers the framework of illness narrative as a resource for understanding and healing church conflict. Resources from biblical and theological sources are also explored. Finally, practices are drawn from these reflections and resources to assist church leaders in helping move churches beyond conflict management toward wholeness."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["5a6e4a36-5801-4bff-8e61-86d7489efb4a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799716917938749440,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T02:10:01.440Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T12:32:59Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:07:37Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"d8cd39d0-faf2-4e2a-a672-2bd438191af0","accessControl_ssim":["74eec09f-d6df-412f-93cf-0def1a0e2a4e"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["The dynamics of healing psychological and spiritual wounds"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T12:32:58Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:19:51Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["a0eb707f-a19f-451e-8848-7bce291dd8f9"],"hasLease_ssim":["1b893ae9-5c82-46ae-9e48-a16277bb2b2a"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["San Francisco Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["William Joseph Sneck"],"year_tesim":["2009"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Linda J Robinson"],"publisher_tesim":["San Francisco Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Pastoral theology","Spiritual healing","Psychology"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This work explores the dynamics in psychological and spiritual healing by tracing the case histories of two individuals over a 60 year life span. The cases are reviewed along four parameters that define basic conditions needed for a human being to be well and to thrive: i.e., connection, identity, freedom, and power; and from three perspectives: family systems using Edwin Friedman's work, individual psychology using Karen Horney's work, and spiritual theology using Ignatius of Loyola's Spiritual Exercises.
